Alas, the poor, poor series of Army Men. Clunky controls and average visuals were a few of the issues these games suffered from... and yet, (you're going to want to punch me for saying this) I found the experience of playing these games almost... magical. Maybe it was the great characters, the series' sense of humor, the cheesball storylines, or the crazy missions that lead you from one crazy locale to the next. Sure, Sarge turns way too slowly in Sarge's Heroes, and strafing is a pain. But if you actually take the time to get used to the controls, the game can be quite fun. The music (especially the first forest level) is very dramatic and fitting (the music on sarge's heroes 2 is good too). The CGI movies (in the games that have them) are excellently done.
I think too many people assume the games are crap because other people have said they are, and they don't want to upset the community. I think people should actually try a game before they say it's crap, because where sarge's heroes lacks gameplay and accessability, it makes up for in atmosphere. Sure, some army men games ARE horrible (Army Men: World War Team Assault or whatever it's called) but some army men games are actually really good - in my opinion, sarge's heroes 2, army men: air combat for N64, army men air attack 2 for PS2 (I think that's what it's called) and army men RTS are all fairly good games. I can remember good times with air combat for N64 playing co-op... Ooh, the teddybear that could shoot lazers out of its eyes was the coolest.
Take it from me, and don't take all Army Men games for granted. If only someone could come and salvage the series.
