I had planned to write something about the Borderlands series, but that will have to wait. I have something I need to get off my chest first. It's very personal, and I hope the two or three of you who follow my sparse blog will spare me this moment. I joked in my review for the bizarre...

T What do these ratings mean?

So at first i was stoked to have another new CnC game.   Sure the last Tiberian game just came out, and it was ok, but the groups kinda sucked, and the aliens kinda ruined it for me.   Here we have what was needed.   A new game, that holds true to the form that Command and Conquere made famous.   The game play is great, the units are cool, and best of all, they improved on what they did before.

The new units for the allies and soviets play alot like previous games, with some new suprises, but the rising sun troops are all brand new and give some flavor, but can take alittle while to get used to.   For me, i like the soviet construction, as it's what i remember, the allies is ok, but having to click each building twice as you queue it and then place it is frustrating.   The Rising Sun's nano cores are interesting as you don't have to worry about base layout as much, but waiting for the cores to travel out, then to build at their locations is also quite frustrating.   it takes alot longer to build up an initial base compared to the other factions.

I really enjoyed the new commander powers that they brought in from the Generals games.   it gives each faction something unique to do, and while it can be frustrating the first few times, once you learn all of the powers, it's fun to use them together.  For example, as the soviets, you can suck up the enemy's tanks with their Magnetic Satelite ability.    It's annoying as hell if it's used on you, because it dosen't generate a warning when it's used, so you group up a huge force of tanks to go attack with, look away for a sec, and they're all gone.   However if you're alert, you can just move your units as the beam moves slowly.   However to counter that, you can use the magnetic singularity to simply root all the units in one place and take them all at once.     Now that you've sucked up all these mighty tanks, what should you do with them?   Drop them into your enemy's base as a devastating weapon of course!

Personally, i'm an ass when i play this game.   One of my favorite tactics is to drop a bunch of engineers into an enemy's base and capture all their good stuff.   in this game, you've got great ways to do it, either by paradroping off your alied bombers, or by flying soviet attack helicoptors into a base.    This is especially nice as the allies as you can then capture the enemy construction yard, pack it up, and immeadiately cronosphere it out to your own base.  The only faction this is hard as is Rising Sun, they have no airborn transport, and have to rely on unarmed transporters that can cloak themselves like spies.    while easy to get into a base, there's not much you can do with them once they're in.

On a side note, base defenses range from perfect to abysmal.   If you can manage to capture your enemies's technology and get 2 or 3 factions built, then ur set.   The allies have a good setup, though it requires you to garison ur defenses with infantry to get the desires result, but at least it's better than Rising sun.    First is the pain of building nanocores to place, then telling them where to move and setup.   After then, you think what a wonderful system this is, i have a defense against anything since my basic tower is anti-air and anti-ground.  Here's the problem, while the AI makes it seem easy by switching the towers on the fly whenever it needs, YOU have to select each tower, and manually switch it from ground attack, to anti-air modes.   EACH tower.   You can't select multipuls, and if you build a bunch up an just leave half air and half ground, you quickly run out of power as the soviets are the only faction with an advanced power source.

Also on teh subject of AI, it's horrible.   I was expecting so much more from EA.   Back in Generals, if you fought against 2-3 brutal opponents, you had a hard fight that took some skill to beat.    In this game?   The enemy will attack you hard and they'll be tough, but if you go in and hit their key buildings, they'll somehow 'forget' to rebuild them.   I had a game that was mostly on water, and all the computer did was build endless infantry that sat there crowding the shore to be killed.   No air units, no fleet.    it was sad.   On top of that, the AI comes in 3 flavors that change from faction to faction.   You are forced to pick one, and that's all you get.   One might attack with infantry, and one with tanks.   But the infantry will do just that, make tons of soldiers and nothing else.

EA should be able to make a halfway decent AI by now.  On some maps, all you need to do to pend off a sure death, is to blow up a bridge so the tanks can't get to you.   he'll keep on pumping out tanks to throw at you even though they have no way to reach you.
