I wanna be a Sky Pirate too!
Well, howdy-doody! Final Fantasy XII, the game I have been waiting for so damn long, the game I pre-ordered many months in advance, the game I looked up, the game I subscribed for daily news, the game I hated (briefly) when I did not become a BETA tester... The game of the century for the PS2.
No matter how much I begged the clerks at EB Games, they would not let me get my copy before the release date. Damn them!
But now that I've got it, and I've played it for almost 6 months, I can honestly say, this is one of the best ones yet.
The characteristic that catches the eye is the new battle system. It is an active battle system, so say good-bye to Random Encounters! (if you seen the Nuclear Power site, you'll know that I'm talking about) This plays much like an MMORPG. It reminded me alot of the .hack games, with the only exception that it was way better and not boring.
There are hundreds of weapons, hundreds of armor, hundreds of magic to choose from, dozens of tekniks, and just about basicly anything to customize your character from a heavily armored sword-and-shield knight, a super-fast katana wielding psychopath, or even a bow-using power-mage (as you can tell, that is my party).
Unlike the previous Fantasys, FFXII uses the license system. Explanation: you find a sword in the field for some reason. It is a good sword. It chops off people's heads. You want to use it. You need a license to use it. Think of it as getting permission for the government, except with enough LP (license points) you can do anything you want and they don't give a damn.
You can also customize your allies AI. If you want them to use fire on a specific type of monster, well then that's what he'll do. Undead, flying, health > 50%, yourself, ally MP < 10%, it's all there, and it's all customizable.
However, with all this comes a hefty price. The monsters are difficult to kill if you don't train, and the hunts are near-impossible when you reach the end of the game. I think the last hunt as over 5 mil in HP.
FFXII is a great game, but because it wanted to be too much like an MMORPG, it takes too long to level up your characters. I've got over 50 hours, and I'm only level 40, and a good 45+ of those hours were spent leveling. It gets repetitive, which is this games only flaw.
I deem you A worthy.
