The only game with superbly overlarged swords
As I first looked at my disk in my hands, I was in disbelief at what I was holding. THE Final Fantasy VII, the one with all the good reviews, all the hype, and all the rumours. When I popped it in my PSX, and started a new game, I was amazed at the graphics. My jaw dropped, and I wa slost in the game, or what we like to call "the zone".
FF7 gives everything a gamer wants. Action. Plot. Girls with overly large breasts (it seems everything in this game is overlarge). It gives everything one can want, or even need, but it also lacks some elements that would make this game A+.
Starting with the lack of voice-overs. I don't know how the rest of you do it, but the lack of voices make this more arduous than reading a book! The only reason it gets so much hours of gameplay is because half the game is just reading what the hell some stupid peasent has to say about the spiky haired Cloud. It makes you want to vomit in rage as you read on, and on, and on.
Asides from the voice overs, the game is pretty intense. The battle system is the best I've seen so far, with good graphics and rendered backgrounds. The magic is a new system called materia. Remember those healers that could only heal and do nothing else in those other games? Well, thank you Square for taking that away from us.
FF7 uses the materia system to be able to use magic. What is materia? Think of it as finding big sphreres on the ground, and inserting it into your weapon and armor, because that's exactly what you do. Some weapons and armor have fewer or more 'slots' to insert materia in, but that is generally reserved for the begining of the game. There is an abundance in Materia, and also more than 1 type. You can use Magic with magic materia, or Cover your friend with Independant Materia, or increase your HP with support materia, or even summon Bahamut! It gives you the feel that you create your characters, and choose who does what.
One of the coolest things incorporated in the game is the Gold Saucer. It is sort of like the Las Vegas of the world. You can gamble on Chocobo Racing, have a round with a boxer in the Wonder Square, or even battle against titans to earn some pretty awesome items. If you have the Gil to spare, this place can occupy you for hours, with that annoying little music you hear everywhere!
Another minigame is the tactical war at Fort Condor. You get to help some guys with headbands defeat the evil Shinra from invading by spending your hard-earned money to help what seems to be a lost cause. Although expensive, it is quite fun to see stupid beasts run over your traps and get hit by your catapults a dozen times before they die.
All in all, this is a game worth buying. If, god forbid, you have never heard of final fantasy 7, one wonders what you have been doing in the past dozen years. It is a great game, worth every penny, and every hour one invests in it.
And it has huge swords! Who doesn't like that?

| You might have a point, if the plot were comprehensible and the materia system didn't turn the entire idea of "strategy" into a joke. That copious amount of text you were almost ready to vomit over has so many typos and so much bad grammar that it is completely impossible to reliably follow the story. And because the materia system turns all the characters into clones of each other, any thought of strategic, ballanced party formation goes out the window. No thought need go into it at all. BOOOOOOOORING! Ironically, you are correct about the Gold Saucer; it *is* the best part of the game. Considering the rest of the game, that isn't really a compliment. |

| Excuse me sah, I say sah! The sole purpose of a review is for readers to gain an opinion of a game for themselves, based on others experiences with the title. Unless I am mistaken, this does not imply that you should force your opinion on everyone else. We can understand your distaste with the game, but please: keep it to yourself. There is no need to write a comment on nearly every reader review, badmouthing a game, and picking holes in people opinions. Bad form, ShadeTail. Bad Form. drizzt908, thank you for a well structured, articulate review, that provides insight as to why people should play Final Fantasy VII. The game is a lot more complex than it first appears, to the tune of a characters strength increasing over his magic power, when he prefers to attack physically over magically, among other things. Sounds like character customisation to me. A game where your actions in battle define your character role doesn't deserve a D. |
