What do these ratings mean?

When playing a game, some of us (such as me) compare the game to other games of that era.  In this day and age of other platform games like Jak and Daxter, or adventure games like Zelda, I can say that Super Mario Galaxy does a great job of staying right up there and is obviously an instant classic.

The game has great controls.  I can’t say this game suffers from button mashing.  Everything is easy enough to play.  Even my girlfriend who has played 2 games in her whole life (yes one of them being crash bandicoot) was surprisingly able to play one level of the game with only a little of my help.

The multiple styles of playing (boo, bee, fire Mario, and ice Mario) really keep the game interesting and fun.  Really never a dull moment…enough said.  Using the wiimote to collect star bits is not super fun or anything, its just different.

Now for the bad.  First of all I take exception to saying that wii games have good graphics.  Yes the game is colorful, but it is blocky and simply not up to par with today’s PS3 and Xbox games.  Some people say that they are not meant to be compared, but if we are allowed to say that Xbox games or ps3 games suck because they are not as interactive as the wii, then we should be able to say that wii games suck graphically and powerfully.  So I guess you can say it has good wii graphics, but terrible modern gaming graphics.  Bad graphics, in my opinion, should not go unpunished.

Finally, the story is the same old stuff as you’ve read 100 times by now.  I’m getting older and it’s increasingly difficult to deal with the whole “love everyone and be nice to your neighbor, and always give and be merry”.  Mario needs to step it up a notch, he needs anger.  Not to say that Mario needs to deviate from Bowser or Peach, just change up the way the 3 interact with each other.  Maybe make Peach a secondary player to go after Bowser who is devouring Toad souls..I don't know, i'd take freakin' anything at this point.

Keeping with the whole “lovey dovey” theme, Mario has got to get some new moves in his arsenal.  Killing by twirling the whole game got boring and fast.  Thankfully the platforming keeps it interesting, but maybe a punch or a kick please (I hope I’m not stepping over bored). However I should mention that after a twirling attack you can kick the dazed goomba's.   I guess i'm asking for an initial kick or punch.

One final thing, The idea of walking around the planets like walking on a giant basketball is not new to Mario galaxy, it's a rub off from Ratchet and clank 2.  Mario Galaxy did enhance the use of this with awesome gravity related features and interesting boss battles, but still it should not be considered revolutionary.

All in all a really solid adventure/platforming game.  I apologize if this review got a little technical with the whole PS3/Xbox comparison, and did not focus on the game in question, but I feel its important to bring out flaws of the wii in general (yes the wii has flaws).  It may seem that i focused too much on the bad, but I rate this game a B+, because the good far outweighs the bad.  The lack of attacking moves, traditional story and blocky graphics removes it from the A category.  But these negatives are so minor to reviewing the game as a whole, that it should be noted this is way more of a good game then a bad one.
