What do these ratings mean?

The brawl has begun...again

When I got my Wii, I was looking forward to the famous Nintendo franchises:

Mario
Metroid
Zelda

And of course Super smash brothers brawl. I loved the first 2 preview smash bros with all my heart. At the time, the idea was original and fun. Is the latest still fun? Indeed. Is it more and fun and bring  a whole initiative to the table...sadly no.

There are many good features about Brawl.

First,  the soundtrack is terrific (with over 9 songs per stages though most of them are unlocked). Each of these songs comes directly from Nintendo's past from Mario's theme to Tetris. One could easily find his picks and listen to them over and over.

Second, the visual got a nice update. Not too big mind you considering the power of the Wii but enough to be noticed. Many details were added (like the detail of the thread of the ice climbers suits) and it runs smoothly at 480P.

One of the biggest and most looked forward inovation was Online battle. This is both a success and a failure. While it is really fun to battle online with friends or total stranger, it seems Nintendo Wifi connection is still in the BETA stage. Indeed, there are many issues. First, it takes forever to find a group. I heard it might be a problem with localisation but everyone seems to have this problem. Also  it is  too restrictive. Why impose the most boring type of match (2 minutes brawl)? Why can't we customize and play on custom stages with anyone on the web? Heck, wasn't that the whole point of the stage builder? It is also a shame that you can't communicate with anyone. I ahve fought many opponents that would have wanted to battle again but there is no way to know who you are fighting against and how to join you. I know Nintendo got a "protect the kids policy" but, while I agree the basis, it get in the way more than it helps, a real bummer. Finnaly, the WFC suffers from terrible lag most of the time. One could say that Nintendo wasn't expecthing that many users connecting to WFC but come on! The game sold more than a million in Japan! Plus it is one of their main title! They could have easily improved it!

beside the Online Battles, here's what upset me:

The unlockable are nice but I guess Nintendo and the guys at Hal laboratory over did it. There are way too many unlockable..... and some that are almost impossible to beat. Unfortunatly, most people will give up before unlocking all of them...

The core of the game is the same as before. I know that perhaps I'm asking much but a new gameplay addition wouldn't have hurt.

The subspace emissary campaign can be fun with a friend but alone, it feels like a chore. The Cg are beautiful and the fact that there is no voice isn't that a problem. However, repetition often makes things boring.....and this is no exception.

Yet, Brawl is still an excellent title for the Wii. Amidst all the bad the game have, the good easily outdone them. If you are looking for a fun fighting/party game, pick this title up. Just keep a cool head and remember, it could be said that it IS Melee with a new paint job. Nothing more, nothing else.

Good

+Excellent soundtrack
+Nice graphics
+Exploits from melee solved which encourage fair gameplay
+SMASH BALLS!
+Gameplay still solid
+Many unlockables!
+Online battles are fun!

Bad

-......if they don't lag
-......If you can find a match
-Same Gameplay than Melee
-Online battle unstable
-Too much unlockables
-Not much innovation
