What do these ratings mean?

Ah Doom 3. I have always been a Doom fan, great shooter. Now after so many long awaited years the much aniticipated Doom 3 has been realesed and let me tell you it does not disappoint.

Campaign/Story

3.5 out 5

You play a nameless marine, just got stationed to Mars and are now currently working for UAC. A very shady business which no one really know what exactly it is that they do. Apprently the board for the UAC has been closely monitoring their progress and now has finaly decided to investigate them personally. They send in Counsellor Swan as chief of operations and tough and rugged veteran marines known as Cambell. Dr. Betruger, the lead scientist and development isnt so happy about this "intrusion of privacy". It turns out Betruger has opened a gateway to Hell unleashing all of the demons onto Mars. Now, you and a handful of marines attempt to close the gate once and for all before the Demons can make it to Earth. The story isnt amazing or anything but its not bad either. Its just average, nothing overaly speacial but cmon, we didnt buy Doom for the story, we bought it to fight demons!

Audio

5 out of 5

I absolutly loved the audio for the game. The creepy noices you hear all over the Mars base realy set you off and drags you into the experience. You can hear moaning or squeals behind you, look around and see nothing. Very cool and creepy. The demons also sound very sinister and creepy. They do their job of scaring the living crap out of you. Each demon has their own distinct sound(like zombies shuffling their feet or the might Hell-Knight and his booming steps). The guns sound great too. Not all the weapons are realistic but all sound great. The plasma gun really won me over, I loved the sound when you reload(sounds like the goggles from Splinter Cell). Audio for this game is definitly this games strongest side.

Graphics

4.5 out of 5

The graphics for Doom 3 are also solid. It really shows how much detail ID went into for the demons. They all look terrifying in their own way(that bug-baby thing really set me off :p). The gun detail looks really good too. The shots fired from the plasma gun and BFG really look awesome espiecally when you see them hit your target. The only real downside is that Mars base is really boring looking. All you realy see is grey walls and long corridors. You do go occasionly outside of the base but even then its nothing spectacular. Overall though great detail on the Demons but its to bad the maps couldnt have been as great.

Gameplay

4.5 out of 5

Gameplay is Doom 3 isnt really revolutionary but its still fun. Doom  was the original user of the chainsaw and boy its still fun to use now. There isnt really much here to set it off from the other shooters but the guns were great. You all know the weapons from the chainsaw to the chaingun, there all here and you will have a blast using them. Its great to see them update them and it was a job well done. The only real negative I had with the gameplay is how dark it was. They do give you a flashlight but you cant have your weapon out as the time with your flashlight. Im sure if chainsaws somehow got on the base you would be able to get some tape?Right? Overall though the shooting is like other FPS' but because of the original weapons ,its hard to knock this game to much.

Online

3 out of 5

Yeah well this is where ID kinda dropped the ball. Its a nice addition but its poorly done. You get the standard modes like Deathmatch but wow does it get boring. I never thought Doom to be a online experience but yes they do have it. It wouldve been nice to see a mode like Demons vs Humans in there seeing as thats what Dooms about but that doesnt exist here. The only thing that saves the online play from a 2 out of 5 is online co-op. You get to play a more "directors cut" version of the game with another player online. Great addition but isnt as well planned out as it shouldve been. Of course you can play through it with harder difficulties but its still the same experience. Overall maybe they shouldve left online out of it but its not brutal, just average.

Overall

A-. This is definitly a great game to all you x-box owners out there. Solid gameplay and audio make this game an allmost definit pick up. Be warned though this is a VERY SCARY GAME and is not for everyone but it is great. I recommend this game(just make sure you can handle the intensity of it :p).
