Awesome, awesome, awesome. Criterion have done a great job making Burnout Paradise. I mean, when I heard that Burnout Paradise was going to be free roaming, I thought: “Cool, but I wonder if it will actually work?” And the answer is: yes, it does work very well. Not only have they made the game free roaming, they have really brought the series into the next generation. The graphics are probably the best I’ve seen in a game, ever. Everything in the game has a true feeling of weight and presence, something that I think was lacking in previous Burnout games. And they got rid of the traffic checking! Yet another wise move brought to you by Criterion.

Now, to the gameplay. I’ve already mentioned the traffic checking, or lack of it, so now I’ll explain the races and so on. The goal of the game is to get marks on your driver’s licence by winning events, and when you’ve won enough, you’re licence is upgraded.  The races themselves are a fair bit harder than in previous Burnout games, in my opinion, because you now have to watch out for traffic, roadside hazards, rival racers, and navigate all at the same time. Not impossible, thanks to a handy compass and turn warning system that tells you what corner you should take next, but it does increase the difficulty, in my opinion. But if your reflexes are fast enough and you don’t panic or get confused, you should have a blast. The cars all feel different in the way they handle, and with 75 cars on offer, there’s a lot to choose from. And you’ll never be stuck for variety in Paradise City. There is an event at every intersection in the game, as well as a time record and showtime (a new version of Crash mode, albeit with the crash physics ramped up over the top and the ability to bounce, or careen, more like, down the road) score down every road in the city to beat. There are races, road rages, stunt runs, marked man, and burning route challenges to beat scattered all over the city. Not to mention Burnout Billboards and shortcut fences to smash, and Super Jumps to land. Have fun.

The only downers in Burnout Paradise in my opinion is that you can’t instanly restart an event you’ve just lost, and you can’t place markers on the map. But honestly, I hardly ever notice these minor flaws.

So overall with Burnout Paradise you have a fun, over the top racer with tons to do and gorgeous graphics. What’s not to like?
