What do these ratings mean?

Gears of War was very hyped as one of the best games to come out for Microsoft. Because there was so much hype there was a lot of added presure on the development team. Even still, Gears of war has turned out to be one of the best games(and hopefully series) to hit the 360.

Campaign/Story

4 out of 5

You play as Markus Phoenix, a living legend and pretty much a one man army. After disobeying a direct order you were thrown into prison to serve out a life sentence. But humanity hasnt been doing so well against the alien invarders known as The Locusts. So they send in your long time friend and comrade Dominick Santiago to get you out. Now, you and your squad must find an item known as The Rezonater to map the Locust tunnels and then fire a missle strike against them. This story works pretty well for the most part(even if they dont reveal much about youre past) and it has its fair share of twists and turns. Might not be "Oscar" worthy but does its job none the less.

Audio

5 out of 5

You may recall Markus Phoenixs' voice, he played Bender from the Simpson like cartoon Futurama. He does a great job of delivering his role into G.O.W., he really makes it well worth your time to listen to the conversations. The music playing during combat is also very well done. Sometimes it has a great orchestral score or sometimes it has a little more intense type of music playing. Both fit the style very well. The Locusts also sound very terrifying and scary by saying certian lines like "Flank left" or "Man down". Your team sounds great too. Cole "Train" brings great humour to the mix and Baird brings the more "egotistic" young soldier role. Both work very well and add more drama to the whole experience.  The guns sound suberb. Every shot fired sound very realistic and makes you feel like you're there. Once you hear a sniper shot zoom past your head, you can feel it too. Audio is a defiently a plus side.

Graphics

4 out of 5

This game has some of the best graphics ive seen in a long time. All your squad has the cool blue armour thing going on which really looks sweet if you got an HD widescreen. The Locusts have their own armour style and they look terrifying as ever. The map graphics and over structure look very good but they do have some bugs and glitches. Sometimes in a cutscene(or just in combat) the enemies look very faded and all their detail look washed away. It can ruin the experience when your in an intense firefight. Although it doesnt happen to often, when it does it kinda ruins the mood. Overall though the graphics look very sharp espiecally in HD or widescreen.

Gameplay

5 out 5

The gameplay in G.O.W. is outstanding. The way they set it up is know the shooting is more tactical and strategic. You are able to virtually use anything as cover, which you will have to take a lot of by the way. You can blind shoot on cover, you can chainsaw people with your Lancer rifle, you can throw a grenade to seal a hole or you can just simly take out every enemy that comes out of it. The choices for combat seem unlimited. However if you play Gears like you do for Halo well get prepared to get owned alot. Like I stated before your going to NEED to take cover but it works out very well. Its great to see something fresh like this for once instead of the usual shooters. Gameplay is overall very excellent and the bar has defiently been raised for all shooters.

Online Play

4 out of 5

Online for Gears is also very good. Because the shooting is more different, your going to have to creat a whole new gameplan for G.O.W. Dont fret though, it wont take you long to get used to the gameplay of online. Just be prepared, alot of people are REALLY good at this so you will die a lot in the beginning. Modes for the online may not be as original as say Halo but they do work well. The fun factor for online is great and it will last you several hours but like I stated before, for such a revolutionary game it wouldve been nice to see the same from the modes. Overall though very solid online which will be fun for a long time.

Overall

B+. This game has all the means for a solid shooter on the 360. Hopefully, this series will have the same popularity and success as Halo did. This game adds something new to the mix and should definitly be picked up by shooting fans or for anyone who wants to try something new and fresh. Overall I highly recomend this game, it will not disappoint you in one bit.
