Ah, Gears of War. What a wonderful romp through a war-torn planet.
Why should you play this game?
I'll highlight some reasons, and as soon as you are satisfied, go buy it.
1) Graphics
These are, without exception, the best graphics in the history of the shooting genre. Better than Halo (1 and 2)and Half-Life (1 and 2). Things will bleed quite often. Lots of BOOM moments (John Madden would be proud).
2) Gameplay
First, the cover system. It is the only thing between a bullet and your brain. Press the A button and you will instantly slam into some wall or a bombed car or anything else in your path. Very intuitive, and it certainly works...but it has a flaw. You also RUN with the A button, meaning that occasionally you will slam against a wall when you really want to run to a spot. Can be annoying, but this is rare once you learn the ropes.
Second, the shooting. It's standard fare with weaponry, with your standard machine gun, shotgun, rocket launcher, pistol, and then comes another BOOM moment. CHAINSAW! Remember Castle Wolfenstein? Yeah, the chainsaw is even BETTER here. An unsuspecting enemy can easily be sliced into meatloaf with a tap of the B button. Very fun.
Finally, the difficulty settings. Casual is very simple, and only the final boss should pose any kind of a challenge. Hardcore is where you MUST take cover at all times or die, as enemy AI is boosted exponentially. Insane is, well...insane. I can't even beat Act 1-1 on Insane. Play if you dare.
3) Online
Average online modes, with your deathmatch modes (three of them) and a recently added Annex mode, where you capture control zones. Rare lag when players join/leave the game, but the online is saved by the headset. Barking tactics to foul-mouthed rogues is futile, but insanely fun to do. Wear a headset or online mode will get boring.
I highly recommend this game for the blood-thirsty shooting fan. Any casual gamer should also enjoy the graphics and...THE CHAINSAW! If you have an Xbox 360, you must buy it.
