Bungie did well on their third installment of the Halo series, but there is something lacking to me in many ways. What Halo 3 partially lacks in story and graphics somewhat, it is still a great game to be had and will ensure you many hours of fun on multiplayer.
First off, lets go over the single player campaign. I hate to say it, but I think the storyline lacks details and it is rather bland. For example, ever notice how you always end up on a Halo, or Earth itself. Well this time you end up on "The Arc", an even bigger Halo ring, but wait.. it encompasses a planet. Doesnt sound really interesting to many of my friends or myself, it probably doesnt to you either. Yes, I know the whole series is about the Halo rings to be destroyed and save humanity and life we know it (As stated by Keyes- CONSTANTLY, seriously, she keeps reminding me the same annoying detail that if I fail everyone is screwed, which gets annoying after the third damn time, ok moving on.). And yes the flood are back, and more moronic than ever, along with the apes, which are smarter, but still easier to kill than elites. The flood were rather a nuisance in this installment, which I mean by all they do is the same old jump and slash tricks as in previous. The only true difference is is they have new combat forms, as well as shielded flood now. As for the brutes, they are tougher than the previous game, where battling them was a joke. I still think brutes are easy to kill still, or atleast easier than the elites, now those were some tough guys. The game details could have had some more depth, which I mean more story detail. And lastly the AI could have been less moronic. I have seen countless time marines blowing themeselves up, driving off cliffs, running into ME or eachother. They are rather useless in my book since they die in 3 shots. Overall, the singleplayer gets a 6/10, ways to fix this could have been by:
1) Making the AI smarter than an erratic LSD addicted monkey.
2) More depth in the storyline.
3) Putting duct tape around Keyes mouth.
4) Making the flood less annoying AND tougher.
Secondly, graphics will be discusssed for this game. The graphics were decent in my book, They didnt match up to games such as Bioshock or CoD4 as what I have seen, however. They are good enough to be considered next gen, even though I think they could have done better with them. The lighting effects and the sky effects are great on Halo 3. I just love to stare at the sky and watch a few Pelicans fly by, you dont see that in neither Bioshock OR Cod4 (Unless your in campaign mode for Cod4). The point I am trying to make is that the graphics need a little more "OOMPH" to them, yet they are good. I give the graphics a 7/10 and it could be improved as stated above.
Multiplayer is the icing on the cake. As most of us know, Halo's multiplayer has been praised for a very long time. Everyone loves the multiplayer, as do I, since it is fun, easy, and addictive. There are its drawbacks, however. One is the inability to create custom matches online, another is the unexpected disconnections. If you disconnect unexpectantly from Halo, its not the router, its the game. I figured this out after the 5th time of disconnectiong, but my router was running smooth. I dont know if its bugs that cause it or overpopulation on the game server. It gets annoying sometimes, especially when you could be on a running riot and you DC, losing it. I give multiplayer a 9/10, it could be a 10 if only the DC's would stop and custom matches were available.
Lastly, I state the extras of the game. The new weapons in the game are great, all new additions, along with some old ones from the previous Halo series are on Halo 3. The assault rifle is back in action, which is great, as well as the pistol. As far as that goes, Halo 3 is going good with its wide range of weapons selections and duel wielding abilities. All the vehicles are back, along with a couple new additions, most notably the hornet, a human flying machine thats(finally) added to even out the odds of those bad 'ol banshees dive bombing you. A Forge is probably the best addition to the game, enabling you to modify various levels to make them cooler or to your liking. I enjoy forge alot and I love to make levels to my liking, as I bet everyone else who has used it. The controls are once again, very easy to use for you casual gamers out there. There is no advanced way to shoot or aim, which is one reason why the first Halo became so popular, this popularity once again comes to Halo 3. I give Halo 3 extras an overall 10/10, mainly because of forge and its new way to create levels on a CONSOLE!
I give Halo 3 a B-. It is a good game, what it lacks in single player, it makes up in multiplayer and forge. Trust me, the multiplayer is to die for.
