Before I start the review proper, I want to make one thing absolutely clear. Up until Halo 3 I have been a huge Halo fan. I loved Halo 1 and 2 (and still do), and have read the first three Halo novels, and will probably read the rest. In short, I love Halo. Up until now, that is...
The Graphics
When it comes to graphics, Halo 3 is a mixed bag. Sure, the High Dynamic Range Lighting is probably the best lighting I have seen in a game so far, but if lighting is the game’s strong point, everything else is its weak point. Geometry, textures, character models, they all look decidedly last-gen. But that’s only when you actually stop and examine the graphics. But if you just play through and try not too criticise little things, the game looks a treat.
The Campaign
I found Halo 3's campaign to be something of a letdown. The levels are more repetitive (Ala Halo: Combat Evolved, only not so bad), the campaign is short, and the story leaves so much unexplained. In the spotlight there is the Master Chief and the Arbiter, and this story arc clear enough, if a little average. Then in the background there is Cortana and the Gravemind's story, which never really seems to make sense. And then looming over it all there is the story of the Forerunners and what happened to them. The main game only hints at this pretty big plot twist, but more information on this matter is contained in secret Terminals hidden throughout the game. But so many people will never even know these exist, let alone find them. In the end the whole Forerunner thing seems like a last minute decision that was tacked onto the game. And once again they haven't told what happens between the previous game and the latest one (In this case, Halo 3). Now I know there is a comic book series explaining this, but it isn't included with the game, and how many people will ever read them? No one I know even knows the novels or comics exist. A few extra cutscenes and it all would have made sense, but once again Bungie have decided to give the job to someone else to explain. Was all their imagination sucked dry after creating Halo 1? The same goes for the levels, where repetitiveness and lack of personality and immersion go hand in hand (Save for the first level, which is pretty cool).
And finally, The Multiplayer
One area where Halo 3 has improved upon its predecessor is the multiplayer. The new weapons and equipment just add to the fun of the multiplayer experience. One problem though, the Assault Rifle is a bit over powered in my opinion. Couple with this the underpowered sound this weapon makes and you get a weird experience where when shooting it you feel like it isn't doing enough damage, and when you're being shot at you feel like it's doing too much damage. I suppose this is fixed easily enough in a patch though. Unfortunately, I have yet to purchase Xbox Live due to a slow Internet connection, so until I do I won’t be able to enjoy Halo 3’s full multiplayer experience. Shame.
