So much more than war...

The recent blog, Peace in the Era of Call of Duty  really made me think about war games that dig deeper than simply a kill streak reward. The first game that came to mind was Spec-Ops: The Line and although I haven’t played it, I began to wonder if it did the war genre as...

What do these ratings mean?

I genuinely believe GAME REVOLUTION hates ID SOFTWARE.

If you've followed their reviews of the other Quake games, you'd notice a trend. They never give Quake its just due for its multiplayer and they always downgrade the games as harshly as possible.

I could see giving Quake 4 a B- for a few of its issues but a C grade is unfair.

#1  Quake 4 similar to Doom 3 is important because it signals a shift in ID Software and Raven's thinking. Instead of more games with no story and no environment, they are trying to offer us an immersive atmosphere while keeping the graphics cutting edge.

Doom was revolutionary for its time, followed by a number of weak successors.

Quake was just DOOM with an attempt at a storyline and less Satanic reference. QUAKE 2 however changed all that by making the theme sci-fi cyborg horror and sending us to Stroggos  which during the time was pretty detailed and interesting for a PC shooter.

Just as the DOOM3 engine allowed the developers to fully Realize the world of the original DOOM, Quake 4 allows the developers to fully realize the world of QUAKE 2.  The cyborg horror theme is FANTASTIC here and makes simply moving through the levels interesting.  The game engine, memory allowances and video card performance allows the developers to make what appears to be a living breathing world on Stroggos - in ways that the developers of QUAKE 2 simply could not.  Quake 4 looks FANTASTIC.

The Sound is good too. Most of it taken from Quake 3 - but it is nevertheless iconic of the series and easily on par with most other game's sound.

The Multiplayer mode could have used much more work though. Xbox live tends to encounter errors which causes games to fail to start. Also, I would have made the game's ranks restart every year's end to give new players a chance to become #1. This game doesn't rank you by accuracy/deaths/kills. Instead it ranks you by WIN POINTS which can only be gotten by WINNING a round at first place. Problem with this is that while I have 3000 points, people who bought the game during launch have 75000 and aren't going to be removed from their top ten spots easily.

As for the GR editor's encounter of "autoswitching weapons" This is easily solved by simply going to the options menu. If the editor is decreasing the games grade for this - then he' stupid.

I love Quake 4. It is basicaly my favorite Xbox game next to Counterstrike (which I'm waiting for an update for - SOURCE).

Before people wanna compare DOOM and QUAKE to other games like Half Life - they should keep in mind that ID software has been on top of the game engine design business for a long time coming and most of the game's they compare  to Quake and DOOM are RUNNING ON THE DOOM AND QUAKE engines.

System Shock

Counterstrike

Half Life

Voyager Elite Forces

to name a few...
