Original Story: Square Enix has officially announced that a brand new Tomb Raider game is coming soon. No official title, release date, or much else was given other than the news that the game is actually in development. Square Enix says that more information on the upcoming Tomb Raider game will be released sometime in 2018.
This announcement came via the official Tomb Raider Twitter in the form of a short letter to fans of the series, which you can check out here. In it, Square Enix says that it wishes it could share more information regarding the game, but it's taking a "new approach this time."
The biggest takeaway from the message is what is mentioned towards the bottom of the short letter. Square Enix notes that it wants fans to know that it won't be very long "between the official reveal and when you can play" the new Tomb Raider game. For fans intrigued by that, you can look forward to a "major event" in 2018 where the reveal will take place.
We've known about a new Tomb Raider game in the series for sometime now, as it was leaked previously by a person who happened to glance at a potential Crystal Dynamics employee working on a presentation on a subway train for the so-called Shadow of the Tomb Raider over a year ago.
It is currently unknown if Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the same game that Square Enix is referring to, but we think so. Most likely, the reveal will happen at next year's E3. Based on Square Enix's letter to fans, it seems that the publisher is taking a more Bethesda-like approach, so we can expect the game to come out soon after its reveal. This could imply a fall 2018 release similar to the previous game Rise of the Tomb Raider that came out on November 10th, 2015.
Update: Internet sleuths have discovered a hidden message in the letter. If you take the first letter of each sentence in the message, it spells out "Shadow", giving major hints that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the official name.
