If you're like me, then you've bought stuff online before. Amazon, Microsoft, Sony, Gamestop, Best Buy. All of them have my credit card information. I'm not a worrier, but this PSN outage has given me cause for concern. Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesman Patrick Seybold stated today that:
As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we're working to get [the network] back online quickly. We'll keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience.
What that repeated statement doesn't inform of us of is the nature of this "external intrusion" to Sony's network. Kevin Butler hasn't exactly been yucking it up about the whole PSN outage either, which begs the question "Is my credit card information safe?"
Seybold told PC World that Sony does not yet know if the personal information or credit card numbers of 75 million users has been compromised but that if any information on the subject came to light, Sony would promptly inform affected users.
With the admittance that this outage is due to an external intrusion and with no end in sight, I can't say I'm feeling all that good about my card information out there. Maybe it's time to request a new debit card.
