Third-party support for the PS Vita hasn't been strong so far. It's even surprised Sony that it's been this difficult to get developers on board. So why is that? What's the problem here? One developer explained that there is a stigma surrounding Sony handhelds that keeps them away from the PS Vita.
"When developers I know hear that I am working on a PS Vita project, because of those sales numbers, their typical response to me is 'Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.'", explains ex-SCEA dev and Twitchy Thumbs Entertainment founder Jim Buck .
Buck continues: "There is some weird knee-jerk superstition when it comes to Sony handheld devices compared to other companies' hardware..."
I really cannot blame developers. The original PSP, while selling a fair amount of units, didn't even come close to the Nintendo DS. That, and it was plagued with piracy, saw little developer support, and was said to be an unprofitable venture.
While the PS Vita may be a different beast altogether, it still suffers from an overall lack of support, mainly due to lack of hardware sales.
It's a shame, too, because everyone here on the GR staff really loves the PS Vita hardware. Maybe an inevitable price drop is exactly what the doctor ordered to cure whatever illness developers feel the Vita has.
