3DS Sales About to Cross 3 Million Units Sold
Posted on Wednesday, December 7 @ 09:24:47 Eastern by Anthony Severino
The 3DS was off to a slow start - there's no denying that. But you also can't overlook the strides its taken recently thanks to a significant price drop and the release of high-profile games like Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.
The combination of a more appealing price and new games to play that you can't find anywhere else has led to a sales spike, and the 3DS is just days away from crossing the three million units sold mark.
Nintendo told Japan's Nikkei newspaper that they fully expect the 3DS to reach four million sold by the handheld's one-year anniversary.
I have no doubt they'll hit 4M before February 2012. It's so easy to say the 3DS isn't performing as well as it should, but that's mostly because of the massive success the DS was. Of course, the 3DS is on track with the DS so who knows. I think Nintendo will be just fine.
The only thing I was skeptical about was the 3D because I had never seen anything 3D before Turns out its pretty cool and love the feature that you can put it on or off. The price definitely helped them sell but I would have payed the full first price with no regrets. Its a great system, it had a slow start but with Zelda, Mario 3DS Land, Mario Kart 7, The eShop & the features already built in, plus the price drop. Things are moving along and won't stop for Nintendo!
I'm willing to bet Nintendo will hit 3.5 million before the holiday season even ends, especially with the new Mario Kart and Super Mario getting top notch reviews across the board (metacritic puts Mario Kart at an 85 and Super Mario at a 90 average). The price drop was handy to have, but it still didn't really move units, evidently Nintendo forgot that system's don't sell themselves games sell systems (specifically ones with the name Mario in the title)
