3DS Surpasses PS3 Lifetime Sales In Japan

Posted on Thursday, December 13 @ 08:56:43 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

The Big N is a force to be reckoned with, especially in the handheld space. Sure, smartphone gaming has taken a significant bite out of the portable market, but in Japan, the 3DS is king. In fact, the handheld has already managed to surpass the PS3 in lifetime sales.

The 3DS sold 211,499 units last week in the country, bringing the total sales of the 3DS in the region to 8,799,378 units. The PlayStation 3 however, has sold 8,716,260 units in Japan since it launched several years ago, now putting it behind the 3DS.

The situation only gets worse for Sony, as PS Vita sales continue to drag. Check out the full list of last week's hardware sales via Media Create's chart below:
  • Nintendo Wii U – 308,142 (308,142)
  • Nintendo 3DS – 211,499 (8,799,378)
  • PlayStation 3 – 36,994 (8,716,260)
  • PSP – 19,637 (19,488,236)
  • PlayStation Vita – 11,039 (1,074,621)
  • Nintendo Wii – 6,714 (12,608,700)
  • Xbox 360 – 1,216 (1,608,399)
  • PlayStation 2 – 904 (21,829,112)
  • Nintendo DS – 424 (32,875,469)

I'm happy the 3DS is doing as well as it is for Nintendo. As long as their handheld business is there, the home console business can sit back and relax. I wonder what the software attachment rate for 3DS is in Japan though.

The Japanese love their hand helds so it isn't surprising that it happened, but I am a little surprised by how fast it happened.

You know the Vita's marketing needs some work (or games) if the PSP is selling a lot better than the Vita.

Wow, people are still buying PS2's which is 12 years old... that's like buying an Atari 2600 even though we have the SNES.

Not quite, the Atari 2600 and SNES are 2 generations apart (2nd and 4th) while the PS2 and PS3 are only 1 generation apart (6th and 7th).

I can't say this is surprising. Console gaming has been losing a lot of ground in Japan for years now. Portable gaming is where the action is over there, and I wouldn't bet on even Nintendo's own console making much headway against that, let alone Sony's.

    The picture should've written "Nintendoland".
