3DS To Double PS Vita Sales In July

Posted on Monday, August 6 @ 06:25:42 Eastern by

Much like the 3DS a year ago, the PlayStation Vita is off to a rocky start. The lack of compelling software (although that changes this week with Sound Shapes) and high price tag is keeping hardware sales to a minimum. The 3DS, however, which has enjoyed strong sales in recent months, is continuing to perform well.

In July, analysts are predicting that the 3DS will double the total units sold of the PlayStation Vita. Even BEFORE the release of the 3DSXL this August.

When the 3DSXL does launch, the PlayStation Vita could get left in its dust, especially with no real killer app in sight.

Tell GR: What does Sony need to do to bring PlayStation Vita sales in line with the 3DS?

It just feels Sony doesn't even care about the Vita anymore. This was evident at E3 when Sony went all-in on the Wonderbook and forgot the Vita even exists. With Sony making so many mistakes and bleeding massive amounts of money, lets all hope for their sake that the Wonderbook saves them...

I think thy should have just rereleased already existing ps3 titles for it at least there would be quality games. Besides the vita can already activate a ps3 and play game loaded in disc drive.

What I think Sony needs to do to keep up is stop treating their handhelds like consoles.

Nintendo knows how to make and sell handheld games, they've been at it since Game & Watch, and had it perfected since the first Game Boy. The make a relatively cheaper system less powerful than their latest console, and focus more on the games themselves than on power and extra features.

Sony, on the other hand, thinks that their console strategy works just as well for handhelds. The PSP was effectively a portable PS2, and marketed mainly as such. However, it was pricer, and often focused more on power, and extra features (UMD, anyone?). The PSP as a game system dragged its feet, while the DS flourished by focusing on games, even though it was a cheaper, less powerful system with fewer features.

The same is happening with the Vita. The new system is once again practically a portable PS3, and marketed as such, with its other features brought to center stage and little focus on games.

Sony sells the Vita like a portable PS3, and putting its features and system power at the forefront rather than the games themselves, and the system is selling poorly in front of its competitor, much like the PSP.

Meanwhile, the 3DS is a less powerful, less feature-laden system that focuses most on its games, and it's flourishing. It stumbled out the gate at first, but it's picking up speed again. Just like the first DS actually, now that I think about it.

Yea the original DS did do poorly at first, but once the Lite was released it blew the original PSP away in terms of sales. The 3DS currently is already destroying the Vita, and I think once the XL releases it is going to get even worse for Sony.

I was debating whether to buy a Vita with my next paycheck, having heard from a few places its a really nice bit of kit. After looking at its current selection of games and checking its software release schedule I lost interest pretty much there and then.
