Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

[UPDATE] 3DS XL Announced, 90% Bigger Screens, No Second Circle Pad

Posted on Friday, June 22 @ 14:30:00 Eastern by

The Nintendo 3DS will be getting a slightly beefier hardware revision. The oft-supposed second circle-pad add-on will be a no show in this edition, though.

The Nintendo 3DS XL adds a rounded form factor, 90% larger screens, and a slightly higher price. The top 3D screen comes in a 4.88 inches while the bottom, touchscreen clocks at 4.18 inches. That's inching (sorry) closer to the 5" screen on the PlayStation Vita, but not quite.

The 3DS XL battery will also get bumped to 3.5-6.5 hours while playing games (compared to 3-5 on the 3DS proper) and 6-10 hours while playing DS games (compared to 5-8). That doesn't mean the 3DS XL (or LL as it's dubbed in Japan) will come with an AC adapter.

Charging comes separately, so if you plan on upgrading, be prepared to hold onto your AC adapters. Three colors have been announced: White, Red/Black, and Silver/Black. The revision will be available in Japan on July 28th (just in time for New Super Mario Bros 2) for 18,900 yen. The 3DS XL will be available in America on August 19th for $199.99 in Black, Black and Blue, and Black and Red.

[UPDATE] Here are some officially released shots of the box and hardware:

This is what's wrong with the handheld market. Or as Longo would say, this, and everything else.

Didn't I just read a statement from Nintendo within the last week saying instead of redesigning the 3DS they would focus on the successor?

So they're doing exactly what I've been predicting all along. I've been saying there wouldn't be a second analog controller, because then there would be games designed for it that wouldn't be supported by the initial build. Pulling a stunt like that this soon after the first release would have (quite understandably) pissed off the install base.

I WAS RIGHT! I predicted this the day the 3DS was announced and here it is. Too bad my fiance already got me the Zelda edition 3DS on Xmas last year. She won't let me trade it in for this one :-(. Looks like I'll have to save because I'm tired of my damn hands cramping (Kid Icarus: Uprising)

I wonder how current 3DS games will behave on this bigger screen? I just sold my 3DS because it looked stupid next to my giant Vita Screen, but I might have tu buy this XL edition, depending on how the older games look, and if I can rob enough banks to get the 200 bucks :). Plus some extra dollars to get the Mario DLC

Well, at least I'm not envious or wishing I had waited for this model before buying a 3DS.

If the battery life was at least 2-4 hours longer than the old 3DS, I might have considered buying it.

This is stupid. I never understood why you would want a bigger version of a handheld already on the market. These things are supposed to be portable, so i would take the smaller one. Except the gameboy micro that was too small.

If the battery life was considerably longer i could see it being a bit better, but as it stands i dont see a reason why we have this, especially after Nintendo said they would't re do the 3DS.

I guess it doesnt really matter anyway. I hardly play my 3DS due to lack of good games. Probably play Kingdom Hearts on it when it comes out, but i mostly just play Minecraft on my phone when i am out places and have nothing to do.

Because some people want a bigger one? just because you dont doesnt mean jack plenty of other people do, not everyone wants to throw it in their pocket and take it everywhere they go.

Yeah I would get the bigger one if I had the chance. The 3DS now is a bit cramped on my big hands.

It looks kinda cheap. And considering how much the first iteration looks like a Fisher-Price toy, that's saying something. Nice to see it's got a longer battery life though.

    Handheld, small portable gaming device...
Whats even better? A larger portable gaming device that lets you play games an hour and a half to 2 hours longer... And another $200

Im guessing you cant turn in the old one for a universal discount on the new one either.

But what about those of us with the Ambassador games? I don't think those are transferrable.

3DS has a system transfer feature. When you get a new one, you can transfer everything from your old one. It's actually quite easy. So no worries about your Ambassador status.

Am I the only one who is shocked and appalled that this new version isn't coming with it's own AC Adapter? I mean come on, that's not a peripheral, that's not an "add on," you ****ing need an AC adapter if you want to use the damn thing more than once. It would be like the PS3 selling it's power cord separately. If people aren't lucky enough to buy it from a store that has employees that know you need to buy the AC adapter separately, tons are going to get home only to find out they have to go back to the store AGAIN to buy something that should have (and always has historically) come in the box to begin with. That is a cheap (unfair) way to gouge out a few extra dollars Nintendo. Shame on you.
