Despite the onslaught of Grand Theft Auto V previews in the past week, the studio's managed to keep fairly quiet about the intimate details surrounding their trio of protagonists. Players will take control of three separate characters, but where they'll go is still up in the air.
That is, until Dan Houser, Vice President and brother of Rockstar Games CEO Sam Houser, spoke with The New York Times and blew a key detail. If you'd like to remain in the dark, hit that back button and check out some other news.
Still here? In the interview, Houser is asked how the trifecta of playable characters affects the writing process in video games. Houser responds:
Just at the conceptual level, the idea was three separate stories that you play in one game. The next bit was, let's not have the stories intersect once or twice but have them completely interwoven. It felt like it was going to be a real narrative strength: you get to play the protagonist and the antagonist in the same story.
Now we'll have to wait and see which is which. Michael is the older character, pulled back in to crime for "one last job." Trevor is a drug-addicted pilot. Franklin is an upcoming gangster. Which do character is the good guy? Which is the bad guy? How will Grand Theft Auto V blur the lines between "protagonist" and "antagonist" in the grime and grit of Los Santos?
