7-Inch Gaming Tablet Reportedly In The Works At Microsoft

Posted on Tuesday, November 6 @ 11:26:39 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Could Microsoft finally be entering the portable gaming market? According to a report from The Verge, it certainly appears that way, as a number of sources have confirmed to the outlet that the previously rumored 7-inch gaming tablet, dubbed the Xbox Surface, is currently in the works.

The device is said to be designed with gamers in mind, with "a custom ARM processor and high-bandwidth RAM designed specifically for gaming tasks." In addition, it allegedly won't run on a full version of Windows, but rather a "custom Windows kernel." Other functions like messaging, which are often standard in tablets, may be included, but again, gaming will serve as its primary function.

Does the idea of a 7-inch gaming tablet have your interest piqued? Let us know in the comments below.

Games are only as good as your ability to interact with them, and touchscreens are perhaps even more limiting and niche than motion controls. They'd have to make it look more like the WiiU tablet for such a thing to be worth it. Or a larger Vita, if you don't want a Nintendo reference.

I agree! You're either catering to the tablet market or the xbox market on the move. If you are focused on the later you are definetly going to need controller ports or something similar to the above. Halo 4 on the go sweet...halo 4 on the go with touchpad controls only - please see Sony Move!

Regardless microsoft found a way into mobile gaming. Sure there's all the cheap mobile indie games they can sell, but also have big time studio developed portable games. The plAtform itself needs little design theory as opposed to making a vita or 3ds. Plus you would be able to connect 360 controller to tablet as well. Portable gaming is where it's at. I buy a lot of apps and games on impulse cause 3 99 for a game that I will play as much as my ps3 games feels more worth it. I bought crysis 2 brand new and just finished I could have saved so much money. Idk that's just how I feel ya know what I mean Mac?

And the last horse finally crosses the finish line. Why would you want a tablet just for gaming? And even if you love mobile games what can Microsoft offer that can't be found on a device that's already n the market?

That's not what I mean. I mean Microsoft would have games iOS and android would have plus it's own xbox library as opposed to the vita and 3ds only having regular third party support. Also I was just trying to imply that tons of casual people might buy those indie games (like myself) that are on other mobile devices which would in turn increase revenue. Microsoft has the ability to offer angry birds(I dont like it but it sells well). Plus they can offer halo whatever for their platform.
