According To FCC Filing, There's A New PS3 Model Inbound

Posted on Thursday, July 5 @ 09:13:23 Eastern by Keri_Honea

Sony has redesigned their consoles in the past for various reasons; some aesthetic and others for hardware improvements. In the case of the PS3 redesign, it was for both. But it seems that they aren't done fiddling around the PS3. So instead of focusing all their hardware energy on the PS4, it looks like they are producing another PS3 model.

They filed paperwork with the FCC for a new model code CECH-4001X specifically for the PlayStation 3. They are currently on the 3000 series.

That's all we know for sure, as Sony has not officially announced what new capabilities the system may have, assuming that it has any at all.

If the PS3 can be further improved then updated versions is always a good thing.

I wonder why they would that other than cutting costs.

Hmmm. This wouldn't make much sense, as they're one of the members of the blu-ray association that owns the patents and trademarks. That's why they put blu-ray in the PS3 and pushed it so aggressively in the first place. And the technology has dropped in price significantly since then. Why would they remove movie playback now?

Unless this thing is $99, by the time it comes out is anyone even going to care?

This new model is a minor update and will improve software stability.
