Advocacy Group Demands Diablo III "Always Online" DRM On Package

Posted on Tuesday, July 24 @ 17:31:17 Eastern by

A German consumer advocacy group is fighting back against "always online" DRM by targetting today's whipping boy of video game lawsuits, Blizzard's Diablo III.

The Federation of Consumer Organisations has issued Blizzard an ultimatum to change the packaging of Diablo III to state that an constant internet connection is required. If Blizzard does not respond by July 27, the developer must face court.

This advocacy group has targeted Diablo III before for its downtime at launch.

But considering that hardware requirements are necessary on the box, perhaps they have a point. Do you think they have one?

I have no idea but it would be great if they won that one, I would ask them to also target Ubisoft's Uplay for being a mandatory bridge between your mouse click and your game.

I think this is a good idea. I cant even count how many of my friends just blindly bought d3 and didnt even listen to me about its terrible drm. Most of them feel angry and annoyed from the problems its brought and specially after blizz told them it would be to combat hackers and dupers which is happening still. Alot of my hardcore D2 fans feel D3 was almost a bait and switch and really wasn't what they expected in the diablo triquel.

I don't know where I stand with this. The cheating in Diablo II was bad enough to ruin the game.

Most people that would buy the game probably already know that it requires an internet connection. But for the three people out there that haven't managed to find out about it yet, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to require it on the package.

Did MMORPGs ever put "requires Internet connection" on box? If so, then yes Diablo should too. If not, then in all fairness Diablo shouldn't have to either.

Diablos not only not an mmo, but it also has a single player mode, your point doesnt really stand, Im pretty sure everyone buying mmos knows the games are online, its in the freaking genre name.

FYI my copy of secrets of faydwer has internet connection required right on the back.

You're missing the point my little worm. I never said diablo was an MMO or that it didn't have single player. The point is that just like an MMO, Diablo 3 requires a constant internet connection, so if a standard has been set by previous games with the same requirement then there's no reason Diablo shouldn't follow suit

I think they do have a point and even if only to set precedence. When PSN went down and it became evident how many games have the hidden online only DRM component that was Bullshit. You really should know what you are buying even those 3 people who haven't heard about Diablo's DRM through the internets. There several games I would not have bought for PS3 had I known the single player would only function with online access. The previous iteration of these games were not hacked or duped...

I haven't bought many games over PSN, but I noticed that "Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2" can only be played when you're connected to PSN, even though it's a single player game.

However, there is a pop-up message which clearly states this BEFORE you make the purchase, which made me much less pissed off about it.
By the same standard, YES, D3 should DEFINITELY state this requirement on the box.

It should say "extreme monk-like patience required" on the box.
