Amazon Cancels Pre-orders For Wii U, £199 Price Too Low?

Posted on Thursday, June 14 @ 15:09:29 Eastern by

Yesterday, Amazon UK opened pre-orders for the Wii U at the surprisingly low £199 price tag, despite an estimate from Japan's Nikkei that Nintendo's upcoming console will be set at around £250. Unlike other online retailers like ShopTo, Amazon's listing did not have a "price is subject to change" disclaimer.

However, Amazon UK has sent out an email today from their Customer Service Department notifying pre-order customers that the Wii U listing was posted in error and thus all pre-orders have been cancelled:
We're writing to you regarding your order for the Nintendo Wii U console. Your order has been cancelled as this product was listed on Amazon.co.uk in error. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

You will not be charged for your order.

If you're interested in ordering the Nintendo Wii U console when it becomes available, you can sign up to receive an email here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004Y59P3A
That's not too surprising, but it is disappointing. Nonetheless, it would seem that the £199 is an utter fantasy.

Fantasy...but it shouldn't be. That's how much it's worth. Games look worse than 6 year old tech...

You do realize the cost of the Wii-U comes from more than just the graphical power, right?

Yes, it also comes from the stupid GamePad. Gimmicks, gimmicks everywhere.

Could always wait a bit before knocking it. Everything has a gimmick now, not just whatever Nintendo makes.

Which is why I said gimmicks everywhere. They have yet to show a reason why you should choose this over a current gen system, or a next gen system.

Games look *better*. Side-by-side comparisons of Arkham City and the upcoming Assassin's Creed 3 show the WiiU versions with noticeably better shading, textures, and motion effects. And the WiiU can manage better graphics just with release titles. Give developers a few years to learn how to optimize their code, and the WiiU will make the PS3 and 360 look like organ grinder monkeys.

Think about the statement you just made.
"Give developers a few years to learn how to optimize their code, and the WiiU will make the PS3 and 360 look like organ grinder monkeys."

In a year or so the nextgen consoles will be here, so the Wii U's graphical capability won't mean anything. The only thing that can save it is a low price.

At this point, the graphics won't even really be the tipping point. Even if the Wii-U suddenly matched PS4 hardware, it all comes down to the games.
