Amazon Opens Android App Store, Makes Birds Angry

Posted on Tuesday, March 22 @ 10:32:03 Eastern by

It's not often that Rovio's app franchise gets given away for free. There's a "LITE" version of Angry Birds available on your app store of choice, but that gives you a pretty limited look at why people love Upset Avians so much.

That's why you Android users should count yourselves lucky. Amazon's Android App Store just opened and to celebrate, they're giving Angry Birds RIO away for free. Yes it's the movie tie-in but that doesn't mean Rovio will hang it out to dry like its holiday offerings.

Head over to Amazon's app store and enter your phone number. Amazon will send you a link to their app and then Angry Birds will presumably be yours. You should probably hold on to the Amazon App because they'll be giving away apps for free every day. If you do get yourself a copy of Angry Birds RIO, tell us what you think! Use our newly updated commenting system and I'll have to pay iTunes money for Angry Birds on my iPhone.

I haven't actually played the game yet, so no comment on that. You do have to jump through quite a few hoops to get Amazon's app store installed though. It wasn't difficult, but there are certainly more steps than there really needed to be. Then once it was installed, the download speeds are significantly slower than they are from the Android Market. It is free though, so I'm not going to complain too loudly.

Spent some time playing it, it's a fun little game. Not being one to own any "i" device I hadn't had a chance to try it before now. It reminds me a great deal of the flash game Bloons. The new ammo types get introduced at just the right intervals to keep the game play from getting stale. Graphically, it has nice bright colors and smooth animations (at least on a three inch screen). I don't know if I would actually pay for it, but for free, it's a nice little time waster.

How about $0.99? Worth it? I just bought it for my girlfriend because she showed some actual interest a while ago. I try to encourage any gaming she wants to do :-)

For $0.99 it's not bad deal. The only problem is that there are only two areas to the game right now, new ones will be released monthly. There are still a good fifty levels to play though. It actually came in pretty handy today at work. We had a pretty decent storm roll through the area about four o'clock or so and we lost power for an hour or so. I couldn't get any work done with electricity, but also didn't want to leave right away in case the power kicked back on, so I pulled out my phone and started slingshotting little birds at stuff. Some of those levels are actually fairly hard.
