LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

Amazon Temporarily Pulls SimCity Due To Overwhelming Complaints

Posted on Thursday, March 7 @ 17:38:20 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Um... sorry, sir, but we're uh... experiencing technical difficulties. The best solution is to just go outside and do something else instead of playing your new $60 game.

Amazon has temporarily disabled sales of SimCity in response to numerous complaints. As indicated by the game's growing list of over 1,000 negative reviews, customers are not happy about not able to play the latest in Maxis' list of simulation titles. Several customers have shared their success with obtaining refunds, while others are stuck biting their fingernails while trying to merely log into the game. Amazon has deferred to saving future customers from the agony.

In case you're wondering, SimCity has been the second major AAA title to run on an always-online DRM model. Those who play the game are required to be connected to the internet, and if either the client or EA's server has connection issues, then the game purchase is no better than the cardboard box it came in. As we—not including EA—learned with Diablo III, there's a huge difference between testing your network infrastructure before launch and the actual debut. Thousands of users have been stuck on loading screens and rendered unable to play for over two days.

This has easily been one of the worst launches in video game history, and there's never been a game that's garnered such a massive amount of negative reviews in a short period of time. Although most gamers are worried about either getting a refund or just finally getting to play the game, the real best case scenario is if always-online DRM dies a swift death following its second implementation. It clearly does more harm than good, and if two talented studios can't pull it off correctly, then who can?

Like i said in a previous comment, and not defending Diablo 3's launch controversy, Blizzard, when they met criticism to their DRM reguarding D3, took full responsibility and did all they could to fix the server problem. They made open letter, rewarded the patient players and keep close communication to the community feedback on the issue. And all that, by the way, was before launch day. It persisted for weeks after Diablo 3 was released until, finally, the server issue was solved. It was bad, but it was handled professionally.

E.A. did the reverse it looks like. They left the players in the dark, didn't test the server capacity and did a pretty week P.R. to inform us. The worst part? Sim city is actually a fun game, this is the first time in my gaming history where i am angry over a game i bought for not allowing me to play! I won't ask for my money back, this issue will be fixed, i'm just mad at E.A. who didn't foresee this... no... didn't warn us that this issue MIGHT happen.

This issue is HUGE. Someone at EA got fired or is in serious trouble for this. Not even the Diablo 3 server issue blew up like this. That's EA for you, I mean they can't even do a simple forum right either (anybody who has tried using EA's forum will know what I'm talking about).

I hope no employees were fired just because some plugs at the top are ruining games by utterly ****ing over consumers to try and make more money. I want games to be epic; I want to get lost and immersed in them. I don't want to constantly be reminded that the publisher of the game has one goal: to make as much goddamn money as possible. Microtransactions can go straight to hell too. So many games nowadays feel like they are half video game and half casino.

Is mass customer dissatisfaction really worth the few extra sales from the anti-piracy DRM? Personally once a company starts pulling shady crap like this (or Capcom putting DLC in games where the content is already on the disc, but locked) I am very reluctant to purchase their products in the future. Companies like Rockstar who refuse to nickel and dime customer and continue to put out amazing titles will always get the benefit of the doubt from me. Hell, their DLC (at least for GTA4 and Red Dead) was essentially full games sold at a discounted price.

Cliffy B and Michael Pachter came out and said that the people who are angry about microtransactions are a minority. However, GameFAQs did a poll yesterday and over 80% said they absolutely despise them. Where do they get these numbers that the angry people are very few?

I have never talked to a single person who isn't at least moderately annoyed by it. I (embarrassingly) used to love playing Angry Birds but my god has it been utterly ruined by popups promoting you to by the special eagle or whatever for a dollar to automatically beat a level. Then they give you these special power ups, one per day, but you can buy more if you want. They let you take a nibble of a chocolate bar and then pull it away. Microtransactions; always online DRM; day-one DLC; unfinished games being shipped because they can just patch them later (cough fallout new vegas). I'm really starting to hate the way some of these companies operate. So many great companies (Blizzard, Bioware) are turning to complete **** now since companies like EA and Activision are trying to make all of their franchises as "mass-market" as possible and stuffing them with DRM/DLC.

As long as people keep buying into games like this, EA and others will keep trolling consumers.

I didn't buy this because they closed the server for "The Sims 3: Pets" (console) after LESS THAN A YEAR, and another game, "Monopoly Streets" is so ridden with bugs that it is pretty much unplayable. Perhaps they werent their most selling games, but if they have a shred of pride, then they should at least have made it LOOK like they were trying to give me some bang for my buck. I guess my distrust was warranted.

Ea is threatening to ban those who complain and are refusing to give refunds. Check out the post in the GR PC forums for chatlog.

I like the comment above about charning us for online, Xbox gen should not charge us for online, knowing that technology gets better but has more leaks to it. And wow EA should be more careful before releasing a game. Anyways, Microsoft, please note that if we pay for online and it fails when we will also complain.

*typo* if we pay for online and it fails, we will also complain about it.
