Analyst Estimates Star Wars: TOR Subscriptions To Decline

Posted on Thursday, April 19 @ 12:52:31 Eastern by

Doug Creutz from analyst group Cowen and Company estimates that subscriptions for Star Wars: The Old Republic will drop more than 25% from February of this year to the end of the current fiscal year in March 2013. For exact numbers, that's 1.7 million to 1.25 million subscribers.

Creutz bases his speculation on server statistics based on TorStatus.net and some educated guesswork:
We believe that the apparent decline in subscribers is most likely due to a lack of 'end-game' content for the title, meaning that players who hit the level cap have few compelling options in terms of ongoing gameplay. While the game got off to a good start, the relatively light amount of end-game content does appear to be taking a toll.

We believe EA is attempting to address the end-game content issue, including a recent major game update, but momentum appears to have stalled and we believe it is prudent to adopt a more conservative forecast on subscribers at this time.
While Creutz still safely estimates that Electronic Arts will do fineand they willbut this doesn't bode well for the new IP.

I just have no idea how this game will last. I think it's severely underdeveloped.

I say 6 months until it goes free-to-play and I'm looking forward to it.

Like buzzards circling a corpse we wait for subscription fees to go free to play. I too may gnaw on that ones innards when exhaustion overtakes it in the desert sun.

It was amusing to play as a Sith, but Jedi are boring. Servers are pretty barren most of the time and honestly, the combat needs some serious work to make it more interesting. Not to mention the various technical issues that should have never made it out of beta that they still haven't addressed. The game could have been much better than it is if they hadn't slapped a Star Wars skin over old school WoW clone.

The problem is not the game in and of itself or lack of content. The problem is TOO many servers. the player to server ratio is horrible and servers such as the one that I play on are for the most part dead. If they would start merging servers, or getting more cross-server content implemented, or allow the transfer of accounts from one server to another would go a long way towards curing the problem.
