E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Analyst Predicts Price Drop For Wii U To Combat Market Share Loss

Posted on Monday, January 14 @ 17:09:12 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Ninten-doomed!

Colin Sebastian of Baird Securities has predicted a grim future for the Wii U in a new report. His prediction bluntly says the following:

Following a somewhat lackluster launch and holiday selling season, Nintendo will need to bring to market major first-party releases (e.g., Zelda) and retain the support of key third-party developers to reduce market share losses. In a negative scenario, Nintendo will be forced to prematurely lower the Wii-U price, and over the course of this cycle, we expect consideration will be given to extending first-party franchises to other platforms.

The Wii U had strong sales numbers during its initial launch period, and you could even call it a success in that regard. But it's the software sales that paint a very different picture. With an average of just over one game sold per console, the attach rate is abysmal. To put it into perspective, NPD figures place it well below what the Wii or even the GameCube were able to muster, and that's saying a lot given how rare each console appeared on hardware charts.

If people are buying consoles but not games, then it's no wonder why some predictions are pessimistic. The near future isn't too bright either, with many of 2013's most anticipated games landing on competitor hardware. Nintendo has been in the game for a long time, so to count them out would be a mistake. That said, the company has a lot of work to do starting with giving its present install base a reason to turn their new console on.

Why did I buy this piece of ****? Ohh right bayonetta 2. Well consider this; I'm having second thoughts.

I feel the same as you. Nintendo better prove that the Wii U is worth keeping or it's as good as dead.

Part of the problem is sony/microsoft/devs believe that this is just crappy and should not be supported so future titles leave us, the buyers ****ed. There is literally nothing we can do but watch Nintendo die as a console competitor. That and the growing popularity of new consoles and the PC gaming issues involving the new consoles from nvidia, and valve which are clearly better products for software.

However Nintendo could be blamed as well as they clearly say that they don't care for 'garage developers' which are actually growing and are becoming extreme successful (though not the case for everyone but I shouldn't have to explain that) I mean if you believe this nintendo, we wouldn't have DotA at all after all that is a garage developed custom game on a wc3 map editor (also before that its AoS which is a starcraft custom map but STOP DEBATING ME INSIDE VOICE)

I think the problem is Nintendo holding themselves back hoping that 3rd parties pick up the slack. People loudly complained just how poor 3rd party support was on the Wii and that the only reason to get a Wii was for Nintendo's games. Nintendo is certainly trying with 3rd parties to let them make good games, but without the Nintendo brand name that we know and love, the Wii-U isn't really anything special.

A $50 price cut couldn't hurt. The 3DS was Ninten-doomed at first until the price cut turned it into a huge success.

Give me free access to Virtual Console games and I'll go buy a Wii U console right now, and then I'll end up buying a lot of new Wii U games too.

Serious question. How is piracy on the Wii U? I know on the Wii it was stupid easy to just play burned versions of games. Is there a chance this is a culprit with the Wii U?

Price drop or no price drop, I'm holding out until the big first party exclusives are at least given a release date. I don't want to drop 250 bucks on this only to have it collecting dust waiting for the big releases to arrive.

That's how it was when I got a Wii. I got it at launch and after two months I had grown tired waiting for some good first party titles to come out

That's also how it is with my 3DS at the moment...if it weren't for DS games, it would be caked in dust. The WiiU has nothing available now or on the horizon that looks appealing to me. Nintendo needs to put them franchises to work! >:0

A $50 price drop would be great. I'm looking to get a Wii U when I get my tax refund. That $50 saved could go towards a game.

Nintendo Nintendo tsk tsk... All you have to do is give us any of the following.
    A new 3d Mario
    A console version of Pokemon
Metroid with a good online shooter
    A new Zelda
    A new smash brothers
Just try giving us what we want for a change, it will do wonders for your share holders.

Uhh why Metroid online? I sure as hell don't want Metroid to become another generic shooter people will grow tired of in a month.

But Halo was built for multiplayer shootouts. Metroid....kinda isn't. Hunters tried to be like Halo and it failed.

But that's what I'm saying, build a Metroid game with a good multiplayer in mind. I know they are not going to do it, this was just a wish list that Nintendo could do to help sell some Nintendo WiiU.

I thought hunters was pretty good, it just suffered from being on a hand held lol

Does Nintendo actually have any good IP without the words "Metroid", "Mario", "Zelda", "Kong" or "Bros" in the title?

AND THAT'S WHY THEY WILL FAIL.

I EXPECTED WiiU sales to not meet projections. I see nothing here worth buying yet. Obviously, most kids don't either. I was listening to stock reports and it turns out that ALL of the console sales were down - and the best selling game over the Holiday was CallofBootyBlackCocks2.

Apple - meanwhile - surpassed sales expectations. Apparently EVERYONE wants iPod5 and iPad Mini.

Nintendo needs to improve the battery life on the controller, get rid of the basic model, bundle a Wiimote and nunchuck with the purchase and drop the price. New Wii Us by now should have the 5GB download preinstalled, it's preposterous to have to download that crap right after buying the console AND at the expense of a good chunk of your hard drive.
I'm interested in a Wii U but those issues are keeping me from buying one. I can see myself playing all the Wii games I missed while waiting for the good Wii U games.
However, I can definitely see Nintendo going the Sega way in a not so distant future, maybe they'd be better off. Focus on handhelds and great games for the other consoles because they can't ever seem to get 3rd party support. The last time they had good 3rd party support for a console was with the SNES.
