Analyst Says PS4 Has "Phenomenal" Graphics, Will Outsell Wii U By Three-Fold

Posted on Sunday, March 10 @ 10:18:00 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Impressive impressions there, mister.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter sits among the crowd of people who are impressed with the PlayStation 4 specs. Geoff Keighley has tweeted an image of a slide from the SXSW panel that boasts Sony's upcoming hardware in every way imaginable. Pachter marked the high-quality RAM as a platform for innovation, and the CPU as a tool for multimedia improvements. Put simply, he thinks the "PS4 is impressive"—that Killzone 4 trailer must have really affected him in the right way.

While the 8-core CPU is around what many expected from the next-gen, the 8GB of GDDR5 memory and powerful discrete graphics card aren't. From a PC gamer perspective it's hard to see how it'll retail for anything that can be classified as affordable, but Sony has assured us that it'll be sold for a reasonable price. If so, it'll be hard to beat.

Unfortunately, for Nintendo the news of the PlayStation 4's "super-charged" specs have completely shrouded its latest console. Everyone expected the Wii U to be the least powerful of next-gen consoles, but not by this large of a margin. Furthermore, Pachter expects the Wii U to sell around 30 million units during its lifetime, as opposed to the 90 million he predicts for the PlayStation 4. When you consider that the Wii U will be undoubtedly the less costly solution, and had a one-year head-start, the prediction is alarming.

If there's one thing to take out of this whole situation, it's that Sony should never be counted out. It appears to have an extremely competitive device with the PS4, and if it manages to have a sound launch—which is more difficult than you'd imagine—then Pachter's predictions are likely to ring true.

I picture Iwata being like Ari Gold on Entourage when he saw the specs of the PS4. "Shit! Fuck! LLOYD! Get Hirai on the phone, NOW!"

    It's believable and hilarious.

Good news for Nintendo. If Patcher is backing the PS4 it means it will most likely fail. Likewise, Patcher predicting the Wii U's failure means it will probably win the Generation again

Seriously, does anyone actually take this guy seriously anymore? He has literally never been right about anything. I don't know how he continues to have a job

    "Has phenomenal graphics"

That's the sound of someone who doesn't have the slightest idea of what they speak.

"huge RAM makes innovation more likely"

8GB was 'huge' five years ago on PC's. However, there is a kernel of truth here and we ought not cast it out just because it's Pachter calling our attention to it. That kernel is this - in finding new, and more complex - ways for objects to interact and for simulated elements to run in a stable condition RAM is and has always been the bottleneck developers have grappled hardest to deal with. Why is the PS3 edition of Skyrim so damn glitchy? RAM. Why are levels smaller but more detailed? RAM. What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage. And RAM.

Basically this. I haven't really seen anything graphically impressive on the PS4 so far, I mean that Killzone footage is only really impressive if you haven't looked at a PC in the last 3 years.

Not that that should be the focus of a console, but I think Sony is really trying to hoodwink people by listing all these impressive sounding specs because they know most people have no idea how computers work. It's like how I could tell you I have 32GB of video memory, and that sounds like a lot because it is, but it could still be the shittiest quality card out there and run things far worse than a 1GB card.

Chances are if Sony is making the specs they're flaunting "affordable", the parts themselves aren't the greatest quality out there.

If the PS4 has a good launch line up, a bunch of games coming out after, and is reasonably priced (say, $400), then it'll outsell everything.

Graphics and hardware don't make sales.

I might have missed it because truthfully I could care less, but how much is the estimated MSRP of Sony's upcoming device? For an "analyst" to compare two products that are not competing on price point or on technology is unprofessional.

Impressive graphics? Unless my screen was shitty or my glasses was dirty, I failed to see anything impressive in graphics during Sony's event. Sounds like just marketing buzz words being thrown around.

I am so used to the latest graphics games are putting out that it's pretty hard to be impressed anymore. Even then, it's going to take more than just graphics to get me sold on a game.

Graphics are a huge seller for games whether you like it not. The average bonehead looks at a game and if the graphics are bad they won't buy it. A shame, but that's the way consumerism works. Graphics are really important, but they don't have to be technically impressive. Even a 2D game can look bad. I prefer unique art styles over technically impressive graphics. Give me some amazing looking art like Ki No Kuni over a shooter that lets you see every scratch in your gun any day. However, Killzone looked absolutely amazing. Lot's of stuff going on on screen that can't be done on current gen consoles.

You're referring to the graphical styles and things the game engine can do rather than pure graphics power, which can be nearly accomplished on any recent hardware.

You say that the average joe only cares about shiny graphics, but if that were fully true, then the DS and Wii would have sold poorly due to using outdated graphical technology. The average non dedicated gamer aren't exactly that obvious either; even they will start noticing how the newest games aren't impressive if it plays out like the last one, graphics be damned.

His first prediction on that slide is that the "next generation of consoles is probably the last" so sorry if I don't give everything else after that much credence. There's still too much speculation about the PS4 & 720 and not nearly enough specifics to make predictions even about their hardware gaming power yet. Oh, and APUs still aren't considered a "discrete graphics card", Jonathan.

The reason the PS4 seems so powerful is because of all the talk about next gen being only a slight upgrade. When the WIi U released with its 3 core CPU and 2GB or RAM, most people thought that the PS4/Xbox 3 would probably be more powerful, but somewhat similar. The PS4 reveal completely blew everyones minds because people simply weren't expecting such powerful hardware.

While the PS4 launch did show specs that were better than anticipated, nobody expected it to be "somewhat similar" to the WiiU in terms of specs. It was pretty well understood that it would be significantly better than Nintendo's latest underpowered offering.

Completely disagree with you. If you go back and re-read all the rumors and speculation about the upcoming consoles a few months ago, you will discover that analysts were anticipating a slight upgrade over the current gen, an effiecieny upgrade if you will. Even if you read this current article it is the opposite of your opinion.

The more they say the wii U sucks, the less developers want to make games for it. That and the whole fact that they're literally holding back next-gen with their current-gen console.

A lot of back stigma from the Wii. It was deemed "a kid's console" and just became the current gen's dump site. Crappy ports, lame budget titles, and a weak Wiishop. There are a good handful of games on the Wii, but Nintendo needs to stop marketing their consoles for kids if you want memorable titles back. Kids these days aren't like they were when the pre-GameCube consoles were out. They are pretty dumb and anything more than Carnival Games or Dora the Explorer Explores Her Dad's Porn Collection is too complicated for them. The days where kids were good and challenged by Zelda and Mario are done.

Highly doubt it will be the last generation of consoles. Consoles are a cheaper gaming route than a full on gaming PC. Most people cannot afford a good gaming PC. There will always be a demand for consoles.

Not really. If you have a shitty PC and a console, you just spent the same amount of money as a PC that can run any current console game on higher settings than the console itself.

I disagree. Consoles are more convenient. Maybe I want to play games while sitting on a couch. Maybe I don't want a expensive gaming PC that will be obsolete in a year.

It's easy enough to avoid that; plan ahead. Not all Intel Core i series processors are cut from the same cloth. Careful shopping will find a CPU capable of handling all the latest games just fine without breaking the bank. Once you have a generous helping of the best RAM you can get (DDR3 is the current standard for PCs, though there are differences on the optimal choice which varies with processor) you won't be upgrading or replacing that for a while. A good tower can be used and reused through multiple configurations. A good sound card tends to last as long as there's a slot for it. The one issue is that you might need to replace video cards periodically. Don't buy the latest and greatest and don't buy AMD/ATI.

oblivion...you just proved Lok-Nar right lol. While that may seem simple to PC gamers like you and me, the average gamer will have NO idea what you're even talking about. Intel i CPU? AMD? RAM? DDR3? Screw it, I'll just get a PS4. That's how consumerism works. Most PC gamers can get pre-made PCs and gaming laptops and upgrade them over time (which is what I do), but even that's too complicated for most. The common denominator will always have the say so when it comes to marketing and what is available on the store shelf.

Not saying the GR peeps are retarded, I'm talking about the average blonde Sara Lue or Jose's dad who can't even use a mouse. These are the people that decide what is available to us.
