Battlefield 3 Will Have "Years Worth of Unlocks"

Posted on Saturday, August 6 @ 11:56:45 Eastern by

The military plays so easily into the leveling system we have in place for video games. Major, General, Sergeant. I have no f***ing clue what each of these mean, but I know that I'm really close to become a level 80 Major General Sergeant so I'd better keep playing.

That's the ultimate purpose of these built-up multiplayer modes. Give players a reason for one more round, keep them drip-fed on new content, and ultimately prevent them from having to buy the competition's game. Battlefield 3 is set to make sure you'll have plenty to do in online multiplayer.

Players will be able to earn hardware to customize their class, including underbarrel grenade launchers and vehicle unlocks. Every kill will also tally up to medals, ribbons, and service stars to display whether you're a team player or not (and you damn well better be). Specific ribbons will call out how many people you healed in a game or how many you killed with a helicopter or jet. The per-match ribbons will add up to medals calling out how many times you've earned a specific ribbon or how long you've played for a specific team.

As for customizing your loadout with your unlocked equipment:

Do you go for the heavy barrel for your assault rifle? It gives added accuracy for single shots, but at the cost of stronger recoil in burst fire/full auto mode. A standard assault rifle can be modified into a long range accurate weapon or for close quarter, almost SMG-like, combat. For jets, do you go with Maverick ATG missiles to take out tanks or AA missiles to dogfight airborne threats? With your Engineer, do you bring your anti-tank or your anti-air RPG launcher?

Give. Me. NOW.

It's a shame I don't really care about FPS unlockables, leveling, or weapon customization. I really only care about playing with friends, or even a enjoyable single player. Lets hope for both

I wonder if there is a medal for longest distance that I will throw my controller after getting fragged in the back every 30 seconds?

    “… your anti-air RPG launcher?”

Anti-air Role Playing Game launcher? Do you use Witcher 2 or TES IV: Oblivion as ammo?

I can't tell if tinymhg's comment is being ignorant or joking. You do know RPG = rocket propelled grenade, right?

Joking! This is a gaming website, and if one was to Google RPG one would get more about Role Playing Games than one would about Rocket Propelled Grenades. And you must have never ever read my blog or any of my other comments to think that I was not joking.

I am ready for Multiplayer Unlocks to go the way of the Dodo. It sucks starting a game, then going up against a clan of players all higher levels than you, meaning they have abilities and stuff that someone like me cannot counter. Take Uncharted 2, for example. Back then, lots of fun. Today, it's run by packs of high level people using Situational Awareness (In game Wallhacking), and the only way to counter that is by leveling up to 45 and get the Evasion boost. Honestly, I don't have the patience of being pubstomped repeatedly, grinding my entire way to when the game becomes "fairer".

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood also ran into this problem for me. I'm the only level 25 going up against level 50 people (Max level) who have ALL THE UPGRADES!! There's only so much matchmaking can do to balance this issue. Best answer for me: Get rid of upgrades entirely, that way skills separate players, not extra grenade launchers on the ends of their sniper rifles...

This stuff won't matter if they don't fix the netcode that broke Bad Company 2 and Medal of Honor. I can't tell you how many times I would be getting shot at and I would take cover only to die when I am well out of sight of the shooter. It doesn't matter how well designed everything else is, that is game breaking in a big way.

Wait. Um...out of sight doesn't mean you can't be hit.
Are you talking about bullet lag or something?
