LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Journey - Best PS3 Exclusive 2012

Platform: PS3

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment of America

Developer: thatgamecompany

Can we call this category a "no contest"? Journey is the first downloadable title on consoles to receive a perfect score from GameRevolution. Not even Limbo or Braid were able to do this. But even if there's disagreement over the perfect score, Journey easily wins the award over the other nominees for its brilliant art design, cooperative multiplayer, and poignant story told without a single word apart from the joyous cries of musical notes.

Jenova Chen's thatgamecompany, through flOw and flower, has always brought innovative, minimalist, and peaceful titles to the indie space, showing that Zen-like serenity has a place in gaming and is a quality that most developers miss or ignore due to the easily marketable popularity of violent murder simulators. Journey dares to be different, and the very first time you glide down the silky, sunlit dunes of sand, it makes its case. With monumentally quiet power.

Runners Up:
  • Twisted Metal
  • The Unfinished Swan
  • Sports Champions 2
  • Starhawk

I am surprised Anthony didn't write this article (no offense Nick). That said I doff my cap to Journey, it's gonna be listed as one of my favorites of all time.

This is going to come off as a surprise to everyone - it even surprises me... but I'm not the biggest fan of Journey. It's not that I don't like the game or see all the great in it, I do. I played this game in bits and pieces for over two years at trade shows and Sony events. I even did some server stress testing for thatgamecompany very early one (almost a year before release). So, in a sense, I had the experience spoiled for me, and it never struck me quite like it did everyone else. For that reason, I wasn't as excited about it nor was I enthusiastic enough to write the blurb. I did agree, however, that Journey deserved the award.

Huh. I wonder how I would have reacted.
I went into Journey not knowing a single thing about it. At all.
Didn't know the name of the developer, didn't know the genre, didn't know aaaaanything at all, and I've only ever played it single player. I went in totally fresh (as I prefer to do), to a greater extent than usual. The way you "learn" everything through non-verbal communication, the way the "story" is completely open to interpretation, and so on. The game itself is kinda fun, but not the main draw. The overall *experience* is what stuck with me.

It really is a monumental game, and really deserves all the awards it receives.

Agreed. This game is the proof that gamers will take quality of quantity. We need more of these smaller, super-polished experiences.

This game does in 2 hours what a lot of games can't achieve in 50.

Sounds like a Final Fantasy plug, amirite!?

I seriously need to stop thinking about Final Fantasy. Tidus was in my dream last night. He was just as annoying as in the game.

Had to be. It had to be Journey and I haven't even played it.

Whoever picked Starhawk as a runner-up has obviously never played Starhawk.

Yeah, that's the only reason why Starhawk was in there. Sports Champions 2 was good, but not deserving of an award or even a runner up spot, either. PS3 had no good exclusives this year.

Even PS All-Stars technically wasn't exclusive since there was a PS Vita version, but damn we needed a runner-up.

We have Jenova Chen, the guy behind Journey and Thatgamecompany, coming on the TV station I work at here in Shanghai to talk about his games. Should be very interesting. This guy has some great stories about his childhood and what inspired him to make these ground breaking games. If anyone has access to ICS keep your eyes on Culture Matters, as it should air early next year.
