Best Shooter 2011

I don't really care about the supposed battle between Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. We know it's all just a fabricated duel between EA and Activision to hype both titles, and yes, us journalists love to bask in this sideshow with our news stories with controversial quotes. We like hits after all. And it pisses a certain group of prepubescent teenagers off, which is fun in its own right.

But are any of you actually surprised that we've given Battlefield 3 the Best Shooter award? We did give this game an A- and Modern Warfare 3 a B-. I mean, as far as we're concerned, Gears of War 3, Dead Space 2, and Crysis 2 had a (much) better chance at snatching the award away. Still, Battlefield 3's team-based multiplayer, which emphasizes each player devoting themselves to a specific role, is difficult to beat. Being ranked first on a team just for being proficient at being a medic or a engineer just doesn't happen often in other games, and multiplayer faithfully rewards squads who work together cohesively. Oh, and did I mention the graphics are awesome as well?

(Actually, we didn't want Modern Warfare 2 to win again... yeah, you know what I said.)

    Awww, I have to respectfully disagree. Gears of War 3 is hands down the best shooter this year. BF3's story bored me too much to make it a serious contender.

    I can understand why your saying that, but was Gears itself ever really about the story? It was basically space marines not in space with beautiful set pieces and a sweet chainsaw gun. Gears 3 I think had the best story of the series, but it's hard to relate to a man who looks like he fell into a massive vat of steroids.

    If you have played gears 1 you have played gears 2 & 3. If you played dead space you have played dead space 2. If you have played crysis... well you get where im going with this.
    If you have played COD4, you have played every cod since then and if u have played BF:BC you have played every DICE shooter including MoH
    For me Gears got this one, if ur not an online gamer BF3 offers you nothing

    I concur with the Captain. BF3 should be in the running for multiplayer GOTY, no doubt. But too many people have judged it as if the single-player campaign doesn't even exist. For that reason, one of the others should have won. Crysis 2 was a bit hefty to get involved with, but was still fun, though I never tried the online. GoW3, from what I've read, seemed quite good on both ends of the spectrum. And MW3, I disagree vehemently with the score it received. Felt that you guys downgraded it simply on the basis that it was a CoD game, even though it offered a much more complete package than BF did. I have to disagree with this pick, folks.

    Crysis 2 was a lot of fun for how mobile you were + all your suit abilities and I enjoyed the multi-player for quite a while. Unfortunately it remained difficult for Crysis 2 to live up to Crysis 1 when so many elements were down-graded for console and the multi-player servers were losing population. I'd assume its worse now but I don't know.

    I agree with Battlefield. I preferred CoD over Battlfield until I got pretty bored with BLOPS and bought Bad Company 2 for the second time. Didn't appreciate it the first.
