BioWare Addresses Mass Effect 3 Criticism At PAX East

Posted on Saturday, April 7 @ 16:29:10 Eastern by

During a ridiculously packed BioWare panel for Mass Effect 3 at PAX East, six BioWare members responded to the wealth of criticism on the still fantastic game. Producer Mike Gamble, Senior Combat Designer Corey Gaspur, Quality Assurance Associate Team Lead Reid Buckmaster, Senior Writer Patrick Weekes and John Dombrow, and Community Manager Chris Priestly (whew!) all addressed the controverseries concerning Tali's face, the game's paid day-one DLC, and of course the hooplah over the game's ending.

Though they didn't particularly comment on the day-one DLC, they showed the free DLC content that will be available, showing off a trailer for the upcoming Resurgence Pack for the multiplayer mode to be released in a couple of days on April 7th.

Arriving some time during the summer, Mass Effect: Extended Cut which will change the ending by adding a few deleted scenes, though the structure and concept of the ending itself will not be altered much. Gamble wanted to explain the purpose behind this DLC:

We want to make sure we actually answer some of the questions that we’re seeing... fill some of the unknowns and, in general, we really wanted to give players a sense of personalization with the ending. We want to make sure that when you see the ending of Mass Effect you now have the information in context and can be satisfied.

Tali's real face, which has been revealed to be just a stock photo with a darker blue tint, was also addressed:
In terms of what Tali’s face looked like and why it looked the way it was, we often use source art for many things within our game. In the case of Tali’s face, we wanted something to be photorealistic. We wanted the level of fidelity to be there. We wanted the color to be right.
Sorry, BioWare, but it would have been better to alter the image a bit more or to render a new model for Tali that's original. Making a facial model from a real-life face is fine, as Shepard's face looks dead-on with Mark Vanderloo's. But this is too much of a cop-out.

At any rate, Gamble is grateful that there are fans who care enough about the franchise to give feedback:
Any time we receive constructive criticism we always welcome it. There are always a few that are not as constructive as possible, but we honestly don’t let it make us jaded. We still understand that there’s a lot of valuable feedback to be provided. We still welcome it.

You know, I don't really mind that the ending kinda sucked. I mean, I was already groaning when they conjured up that ancient superweapon out of nowhere at the beginning. Really I felt the game was good, but it was full of rather contrived scenarios that seemed to exist only for dramatic effect. Examples: Mordin at the tower, Grunt holding off the rachni, and the part of the game I hated most, everyone looking away after the Kai Leng fight despite him not being dead.
But yeah, I'm really happy about free DLC though. Not because it expands on the ending, but because it is free. However, I hope they explain what happened to your two party members during the rush to the beam, or why the Normandy was flying away at the end, or what the heck the practical implications of the synthesis ending are.

This is what happens when games are made by publishers and not developers.

That's what I mean. I understand the need for an accountant at the top, but games are made by bean counters now. Non-tester gamers can see the cuts pretty damn clearly now, what happened to long, sprawling and thought out single player campaigns? Is Half Life 3, for example, the last salvation when, if, it comes, or has that been killed by publishers?

I totally agree that many, many games are nothing more than business ventures for publishers (movie tie-in games anyone?). It's always been that way. The same is true for movies/TV. But saying there are no "long, sprawling, and thought out" games these days? Totally have to disagree there. Just in the last year there's been Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Batman: AC, Deus Ex: HR, Dark Souls, LA Noire, and on and on.

With perhaps the exception of the day 1 dlc, all of the criticism of ME3 has been ridiculously blown out of proportion. The current internet fad among gamers is to complain about ME3. A few months ago, it was trashing on anyone who bought MW3. Next up is *****ing about Diablo 3. Bioware should stop apologizing & trying to make every single person happy. It would have been better if they came out at PAX and told everyone to suck it.

Many dlcs and other bad ideas are the bastard children of bean counters, I wonder if anyones ever asked these people if theyve even played these games or any games for that matter. Weve traded the longevity and replay value of a great single player game for an ok single player with multiplayer, or worse yet a terrible and short single player game thats really only a training course for the multiplayer. Whenever a new single player game is being made somebody has to ask is there multiplayer and I just want to reach thru my monitor and tear their eyelids off. I still believe the introduction of multiplayer spread them a little thin and the endings suffered.

    *Spoilers!*

My only problem with the ending continues to be that Joker didn't shatter every bone in his body in that crash landing.
