BioWare Founders Say Mass Effect MMO Is A Possibility

Posted on Monday, February 27 @ 12:21:56 Eastern by Keri_Honea

As diehard Mass Effect fans, we're very eager to play Commander Shepard's final story in the trilogy, but we're also eager to keep the Mass Effect universe alive. The multiplayer portion of Mass Effect 3 may satiate these cravings initially, but only one thing will appease us: a Mass Effect MMO.

The fans have discussed it, but in an interview with Penny Arcade, BioWare's founders hinted that such an MMO could be a possibility.

"It's daunting, but the neat thing is it would lend itself to a different type of gameplay. It's fun to think about, " Dr. Greg Zeschuk said. "I imagine people think it would be just like Mass Effect as it is, but there's lots of people there...I don't know. It's a tough one."

Dr. Ray Muzyka further said that since Mass Effect has such a large universe, there are plenty of areas for the franchise to extend toward. The difficulty lies in determining what the players believe is possible, or the "possibility space."

"You need to let them do everything they think they shoud do, and you can't block them from doing anything they think they should be able to do. You have to nail all of the features and content that should be in that possibility space," he explained.

I think it goes without saying that it would be a massive undertaking, but since the studio tackled Star Wars' universe so well with The Old Republic, surely they can do the same with a universe they created.

I've never thought of playing an MMO before, but I would definitely pop that cherry in the name of Mass Effect.

I don't know about an MMO. I don't think i'd like it much since the main focus is that you are changing the world just you. hmm. Meh

"I imagine people think it would be just like Mass Effect as it is" - This makes me nervous. Trying to change it into a WoW-clone with SWTOR/bioware storytelling in the ME universe is going to kill what I have come to know as Mass Effect. I don't see anything wrong with keeping it as is and blowing it up to MMO scale.

Maybe down the line, but I think they might be jumping the gun. The industry is fast heading down a path of over-saturation with MMO titles, and eventually some will flourish at the expense of others. Much like with the WW2 shooters in the mid 2000's, gamers start seeing too many of them, they are going to start straying from the genre and looking elsewhere.

Yes, they might be able to retain those who are loyal to the franchise. But MMO's don't survive on the most rabid of the fanbase alone. They need the casual gamers, and it seems every month that those casual fans have a harder choice to make. Think about it, by this time next year, it stands to reason that there will be 3 major MMO's competing for subscriptions (WoW, TOR, D3), along with handfuls of lesser MMO's, does the Mass Effect series really need to go prodding off in that direction?

With the massive scale of the universe they created, would it really be hard for them to simply plot out a new hero, a new adventure?

It would have to be a sandbox like EVE to work.

How about they just put out another Mass Effect game with an even bigger (or total) focus on multiplayer but with more modes than just co-op vs. waves of AI. As long as they kept most of the current ME mechanics (maybe with faster/smoother movement) and stay away from it being another "action bar" mmorpg I'd be happy.
