Black Ops II Day One Sales Bring In $500 Million

Posted on Friday, November 16 @ 09:51:28 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

I'm sure to no one's surprise, Call of Duty: Black Ops II had a massive launch this week, bringing in over $500 million in sales during the first 24 hours.

Everyone's favorite game exec, Bobby Kotick, released the following statement, touting the game's incredible performance:

With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row.

Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars,” the two most successful movie franchises of all time. Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013.

Is Black Ops II worthy of all this success? Is it truly the best Call of Duty to date? You decide in the comments below.

I feel that comparing it to movies is an unfair assessment. Movie tickets are $10, while a new game is $60.
I am curious though how much money Activision dumped into the marketing campaign.

$160 if you decide to get the special edition...which might still leave you shafted on PS3 if the DLC codes F you up (dunno if X360 users have the same problem).

how much of that money will have to go towards refunds for angry PC and PS3 users?
