Black Ops II Sales Break 8 Million In First Day, 1+ Million Behind Modern Warfare 3

Posted on Wednesday, November 14 @ 12:29:35 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Call of Duty: Black Ops II has sold millions of units. Are you surprised? Well, you might be.

Metro UK has reported that Call of Duty: Black Ops II managed to push 8 million units in its first 24 hours following launch. While already extremely lucrative, these numbers put it behind last year's Modern Warfare 3 which accrued 9.3 million in the same time frame. On the bright side, it's a step up from Modern Warfare 2 and the original Black Ops which sold 6 million and 7 million respectively.

Black Ops II still has a long road ahead as well as a release on Wii U this Sunday.  However, it does feel a bit strange to see Call of Duty have a decline in launch sales, especially with a profound marketing campaign behind it. Trends made it look like this day would never come, but maybe the age of console hardware and Halo 4's prominence may have taken a toll on poor ol' Call of Duty.

Yes! Take that Activision! I don't know why i'm happy about it, i actually like most Call Of Duty's, but it makes me happy to see that Halo 4 played a part in black ops 2 selling less on launch day :)

I had a feeling MW3 sold 6 million.... still, Halo is probably a better game, definitely deserves more sales than an annual rehash

The numbers for the UK started dropping when MW3 hit, while the US numbers rise...is that the same case here?

It's all about lead-in, like the Jay Leno / Connan O'Brien debacle.

MW2 didn't have a great lead in with WAW, MW2 was a great predecessor to BO, and the fact that MW3 wasn't great has hurt BO2.

I was hoping that 1 million people realized they were about to buy the same thing they did last year.

Only partly true. It's very much different, but interactions with other human beings online is still very much the same. Campers, quick-scopers...poor sportsmen.

I'm still too stoked about Halo to buy a shooter that I won't play for months.
I'm sure it'll make a great rental. Michael Bay movies always are.

Dito. I'm not interested in getting Black Ops 2 actually, but even if I did buy it, i would neglet it for a long time because i'd be playing Halo. Now that I think about it, i'd be playing Halo until i got a Wii U for christmas. COD would never get played.

Correction, MW3 sold 6.5 million in first day sales. 8 million would be a new record. Need to do better research so you don't lead some to make ignorant comments.

You're talking about the 6.5 million in North America. North America =/= The World.

You do realize this number is for North America and the UK alone right? Compared to the 6.5 million MW3 did in its first day in North America and UK. We can discuss this further when actual numbers are released and this misinformed reporting is proven. Deal?

i dont think it matters ..... 8 million is a pretty big number and then there are other games that activision will release and again there is the fact that its just day one.
