Blizzard Admits That Diablo III's End-Game "Is Just Not Enough"

Posted on Thursday, July 5 @ 16:04:04 Eastern by

We know that Diablo III has had its problems with servers and game-breaking bugs, and most recently, players have been less than thrilled with the end-game, particularly fans who have unlocked Inferno difficulty. But let Blizzard's Community Manager Bashiok acknowledge those complaints himself in Diablo III's official forums:

We recognize that the item hunt is just not enough for a long-term sustainable end-game. There are still tons of people playing every day and week, and playing a lot, but eventually they're going to run out of stuff to do (if they haven't already). Killing enemies and finding items is a lot of fun, and we think we have a lot of the systems surrounding that right, or at least on the right path with a few corrections and tweaks.

But honestly Diablo III is not World of Warcraft. We aren't going to be able to pump out tons of new systems and content every couple months. There needs to be something else that keeps people engaged, and we know it's not there right now.

Luckily, the addition of PvP arenas will be coming soon, though that's not their first priority at the moment:
We're working toward 1.0.4, which we're really trying to pack with as many fixes and changes we can to help you guys out (and we'll have a bunch of articles posted with all the details as we get closer), and we're of course working on 1.1 with PvP arenas. I think both those patches will do a lot to give people things to do, and get them excited about playing, but they're not going to be a real end-game solution, at least not what we would expect out of a proper end-game. We have some ideas for progression systems, but honestly it's a huge feature if we want to try to do it right, and not something we could envision being possible until well after 1.1 which it itself still a ways out.
How would you boost Diablo III's end-game?

It isn't. The gameplay is great but I'm terribly bored with endgame already.

Expansions. Remember D2: LoD? Yeah, that was a good game. Expansion packs of that quality are far superior to MMOs with monthly subscription fees.

I'm sure they will. A new act and a couple new classes will add many many hours to the game

I haven't played in around 2 weeks now. I've re-run the same content so many times on my Witch Doctor I stopped playing my Monk at around level 52. PvP is not going to make me want to play. Gear grinding doesn't really make me want to play, because once I have the gear, what do I do? I'd love an X-pack, but if they did it anytime soon people would froth at the mouth (and rightly so) at how they've been ripped off by beta testing a game for $60 and then being forced to buy end game.

The ending leaves enough for expansion in story, I dont know what theyd do for expansion in areas to explore.

Ive been gathering gold and doing achievements so I havent even gotten to Act 2 in Nightmare, guess I took a better approach to the game than plowing thru. Ill have to actually get my hardcore toon past lvl 10 eventually. The pvp arenas will make both the ahs... interesting. Just wish theyd fix the gold spammers in general chat its aggravating.

Me as well. I enjoy clearing areas and exploring so at 20 hours I'm still on Act 2 Nightmare and I only have one character. I'm going to play my Wizard until I get bored then start a new one. Once I've done that with all the characters, then I will worry about lacking endgame.

I was pretty up and down with emotions about this game, if you see the OT Diablo 3 thread you'll know what I mean XD Page after page of ups and downs, my personal blog.

I now have settled in and love the game. It has HUGE room for improvement but I fully believe it will be polished into a typical Blizzard gem.

I got bored and started rolling new classes. I now have all but the WD at 60, all with gear good enough to clear to act 3 anyway.

Barb is my powerhouse and MF char. Now everytime I find a decent item it IS an upgrade for one of my characters generally. If not I'll AH it, or if it's really good RMAH it.

Soon I'll work on achievements. i won't touch hardcore until server stability is really solid, my rage couldn't take it.

Just be patient, it'll be an epic game soon enough.

I don't blame you. D2 was much more fun than D3. Once the novelty runs out, there should be little disagreement on which was better.

I don't think a single person has said to this day that Diablo 3 is better than 2.

I just personally believe through patches and updates Diablo 3 has the potential to live up to Diablo 2. Diablo 2 was crap at launch and for quite a while after. Was a long time before it became a great game.

Make the Necromancer playable, give us a sandbox mode, and dramatically cut back on the stats of items so they aren't so ridiculously powered.

I think researching new builds that work in inferno is also fun. I've spent many hours scouring the internet for viable builds and then expanding on them. Wicked Wind is fantastic--with the right gear. I like how, from the start, Blizz said they had in mind to create a game where build modification can work--I believe them.

More content is definitely a must though. One can only level through all four difficulties and all four acts so many times...And, for the casual player, hell is really it. A lot of casual people will not spend the hours needed to farm AI and AII to get through the brickwall that many consider AIII and IV.

But hey, always remember! It is free-to-play.

True. But a lot of paid-for MMO's went FTP, so by that logic, they need a new category! ha.

It's close enough--but I understand that it isn't the de facto we've come to see in similar games such as WoW, Rift, DAOC, Lineage, SWTOR, etc. While an Action-RPG, the DRM effectively has made this an MMO--which does stand for massively multiplayer online. So, although not WoW, it is essentially an MMORPG at heart, no matter how you'd like to think of an MMO.

Essentially, this is why I had stated that a new category could technically be created for DRM-mandated games. Unfortunately, there is not one. So, it more-or-less is an MMO, albeit without subscription fees.

And honestly, considering all games breech the $60 price tag now-a-days, you do get what you pay for.
