Blizzard Looking into Gamepad Controls for Diablo III

Posted on Monday, September 26 @ 16:15:22 Eastern by Josh_Laddin

With some lucky people lost in the Diablo III beta already and the rest foaming at the mouth in an effort to get in, it's all but certain that a huge share of the PC gaming population are going to make the game a titanic success (and Blizzard making even more money off of the cold hard cash Auction House will certainly help). But after this interview with PC Gamer, don't be surprised if you see the beast make its way to consoles at some point in the future.

DIII's director Jay Wilson said that they're looking into control schemes beyond the traditional keyboard and mouse, specifically a 360-like controller:

One of the reasons why we’re exploring the idea of a console version of Diablo 3 because we feel that the controls and the style of the game lend itself to a console. With some of our early experiments in putting a direct control scheme into the game via a 360-like analogue controller, I’ve been ‘Oh this feels even better, with direct control…

Such a thing would certainly be nice. I can just imagine using a good ol' analog stick to maneuver through those dungeons and it definitely seems more natural than a keyboard and mouse combo. But if this is gonna happen, it won't be in time for launch.

"I can pretty much guarantee that if we decide to do a console version that we will look to support a pad on the PC,” Wilson stated. “But initially with release I don’t think we’ll be ready."

I still won't be getting this unless they loosen up the DRM. But an Xbox Live / PSN release normally wouldn't need an always on connection type DRM anyway, so I might actually get this on a console release, if one ever happens.

Until then, Torchlight 2 all the way baby!

As soon as I heard about the real cash auction I knew I would be able to live without this and be satisfied with Torchlight 2!

Honestly, as a hardcore PC gamer, I have to say a controller is more comfortable for gaming. I also think the XBOX 360 controller is simply the finest controller you can buy. I still wouldn't play that game with a controller, but I can certainly understand the utility.

Blizzard does things glacially so do not expect a console version until Xbox 720 is a couple of years old.

Don't care. I'll be busy with Torchlight 2, the true successor to Diablo II.
