Borderlands 2 Flirts With Wii U

Posted on Wednesday, July 18 @ 10:22:46 Eastern by

Gearbox co-founder Brian Martel has been rubbing shoulders with the idea of bringing Borderlands 2 to the Nintendo's much-anticipated Wii U. If so, it will be a test of the console's graphics and online capabilities.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Martel complemented the Wii U:
We really like the Wii U, I think it's a really cool platform. I like what they're doing - obviously with the touchscreen. So we're really excited to bring Aliens: Colonial Marines to it. And we're going to do a wait and see approach, our publisher 2K is going to see whether they're going to go with that.

If Borderlands 2 was on the Wii U, the thing I would be most excited about is inventory management: it would be amazing on that, it would just be fantastic. And I think the artwork would look really good, with the way they can deal with the resolutions and textures, I think it's a really good console.
It seems that the touchscreen, much like the bottom screen on the 3DS, will be used once again for swapping items and weapons. Hopefully, it can be used for something more, like a two-player mode without needing split-screen.

I like the idea of 2player where the player with the tablet is controlling the environment or something to that effect to either hinder or help the other player along. I think the leaked rayman game showed something like this.

I agree, as innovative as Nintendo usually is, this is nothing more than a recycled idea that they are passing to pass off as revolutionary. The Atari Jaguar was basically the same thing, using overlays forcing the user to look down at the controller albeit in analog form and not digital like the Wii U. Furthermore, this is simply a rip off of their own idea with the DS. The Wii U gamepad is going to act exactly like the DS' bottom screen... way to rip off your own 8 year old tech. Nintendo will desperately attempt new ideas using the wii u gamepad, but unfortunately they are all going to turn out to be gimmicks.

All it will take is for one guy to die one time while he is busy looking at his controller and this whole "innovation" will be kaput. The intentional throwing of Wii U controllers will have even less favor than the unintentional hilarity of tossed Wiimotes.
