E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

California's Violent Video Game Law Could Cost State $1.1 Million

Posted on Monday, July 25 @ 10:47:34 Eastern by

You probably already know about the video game industry's recent victory against the state of California in the highest court in the land... I'm talking about the Supreme Court of the United States! Woo!!! YES YES YES! Oh... *ahem* sorry, it's just exciting to know that video games are offered the same first amendment protections as movies, music, books, and even poetry.

What you might not know about these legal trials and tribulations is that they don't come cheap. In fact, the Entertainment Software Association has filed for $1.1 MILLION in reimbursement from the State of California for attorneys' fees and other legal costs of fighting Brown/Schwarzenegger V. EMA. The ESA states:

California persisted in defending a law that Plaintiffs warned the Legislature was unconstitutional before it was passed; that was previously founded to be unconstitutional by the district court and a unanimous panel of the Ninth Circuit; and that is similar to at least either other laws invalidated as unconstitutional prior to the time that California sought certiorari in this case.

You know, as a California resident, taxpayer, and... fan of video games, I kind of wish the State could have backed off back in 2008 when it was forced to pay up $282,794 for similar claims from the ESA....

As much as I hate to see tax payers’ money wasted, I’m glad this did make it to the Supreme Court. Now with this strong precedent in place other lawmakers will think twice about attempting to pass similar laws. Maybe it was worth it.

The cost will be worth it in the long run. $1 million now, with the issue settled, or paying who knows how many millions more of taxpayers' money in the future with the same types of cases tied up in the court systems for years (if the courts had sided against the ESA, that is).

In reality, the entire situation was so stupid and asinine that it should never have to have been taken to court in the first place. The time and money the state wasted on this "crusade against indecency" could have been better spent on much more worthwhile and important causes instead of trying to protect the innocent little children from some bad words and digital blood perpetrated by the big, bad, evil corporations.

Since Arnold was pushing this, why not make him pay the $1.1M himself? He can afford it. He has probably made that much money just from the various violent video games that have used his image.
