Carmack: PS4 and Next Xbox Will Be 10 Times as Powerful

Posted on Friday, June 17 @ 14:24:17 Eastern by

Legendary programmer John Carmack not only believes that Microsoft and Sony will "be here in a couple of years", but also that the next generation of consoles will be "ten times as powerful as this [generation's]".

While many can't wait for that to happen, Carmack is more of a realist and understands that photorealism is essentially the limit of graphics and that it's coming soon:

I'd be surprised if that doesn't last over a decade before people wind up saying, well, we've really tapped out everything you could possible do on there. The better games get get, the harder you have to go to give a delta people care about. That's going to be challenge for the next generation of consoles, to show what pack-in title is going to look so much more awesome than what you get on the current ones that people want to go spend $300 on a new console.

They'll be able to do it on the next generation, but it's going to be much harder.

In fact, he earlier proposed that in ten years' time cloud computing would take the industry by storm, as much as some gamers still swear by physical copies for their game collections.

F*cked if I am giving up on hard copies of my games. I will not pay a monthly fee, or whatever it is, for something I will never actually own. Thats like leasing a car which is just a retarded idea. I like seeing my discs, knowing I own em and can play them whenever I want, even if there is no internet connection.

Yeah, I like owning my stuff. F*ck cloud computing and such.
Everyone seems to focus on graphics, if there is more power available on a console, developers should concentrate on the AI. I would like to have games where the AI learns and adapts to my style of play. That would do wonders for replay value 'cause every time you play it would be a different experience.

So long as it doesn't get so smart that it wonders why it has to forever get shot and blown up for your entertainment. You don't want the AI becoming self-aware... especially when it has your credit card number :)

Then you would have to get better and show it who's its daddy! You'd be like, you touch my credit card and I'll throw the disc in the microwave sucka!

I need a console that will s*ck my d*ck and then make me a sandwich. Then I wouldn't need anything else.

Sony's rumored price drop of the PS3 is a good sign that Sony is working on the next gen. And I say this because they probably learned that the next system shouldn't be so expensive like the PS3 was. I believe PS4 will be priced at $399 like Xbox 360 first was. I for sea Sony going with a more Android like OS, with touch pad hybrid controllers with handles that detach and turn into the move controller. The specs are going to be obvious. The Blu Ray Drive will be at least 24x speed, it will come with a optional 32 gig Solid State HardDrive or a gaming speed 120 gig harddrive. The graphics card will be done by ATI with 1gig graphics memory and the processor will be done by AMD as it is more stable and longer lasting processor than the Intell counterpart. It will sport a wireless N and it will have cross game / cross platform = NGP chat.
