Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Chinese Telecom Tencent Pays $330M For 40% Stake In Epic Games

Posted on Friday, March 22 @ 12:00:00 Eastern by

In financial reports from the company, Epic Games has revealed that the (as reported) "minority" investment made last June in the company by Chinese telecom Tencent totaled $330 million for a grand 40% stake in the maker of the Unreal Engine.

When the deal was originally made, Tencent put two of its own on the Epic board of directors, but the amount of money exchanging hands remained indisclosed. Speaking with Polygon, Epic founder Tim Sweeney said that the company is "thrilled to have a world-leading partner in Tencent, who gives Epic unique access to the Chinese market as we head into the next chapter of our 21-year history as a leading independant developer."

40% ownership is quite the stake though! How independent do you stay when nearly half of your building is owned by a foreign company? After the deal close in June, Rod Fergusson left Epic in August for Irrational Games, Cliff Bleszinski in October, and Mike Capps in December. Seems pretty clear why now, doesn't it?

I'm just saying if I shared a house with a Chinese company and they were like "Dude, 40% of this house is mine," I'd probably leave and screw them over on the rent too.

This is pretty much the main way that businesses penetrate into the Chinese market. That said, it is more common for larger companies to create separate joint ventures with a Chinese partner rather than sell a stake in the main company outright.

All that work on Unreal 3 will pay off when the average phone can run it at console speeds in a few years, but I just really don't want Epic to switch to primarily mobile/social as that's Tencent's bread and butter. I get it, just not where I'd steer the ship I guess.

Also, in light of that comment, it makes me re-think Infinity Blade as almost a proof of concept for Tencent rather than an autonomous push into mobile.

That could be true too. They were in talks with Tencent but the Chinese firm wanted to see what Epic could do since consoles don't sell in China...

or they do but they're called the PX3 and Box X.
