Crytek Wants 8GB of RAM in Next-Gen Consoles

Posted on Monday, April 18 @ 17:48:06 Eastern by

There's no denying that Crysis 2 looks great, no matter what platform you play it on... While the original Crysis was such a beast it was considered a PC benchmark device, Crysis 2 maintains it's level of fidelity across the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

All those textures, polygons, and... magic bits don't happen on their own though. The platform has to have the processing power, the graphics capabilities, and random access memory to make it all happen.

The average gaming PC has about 8GBs of RAM nowadays. The PS3 and Xbox 360 only have about half a gig. Crytek thinks the next generation of consoles needs to be beefier:

My finger-pointing at Microsoft/Sony would really be on the memory side. It's way too low, and the biggest crippling factor from a visual perspective. I would really like to see next-gen console platforms with a minimum of 8GB.

That's Crytek engineer Tiago Sousa. Aside from his name, Tiago's claim to fame is that he's Crytek's principal graphics engineer. If Crysis 2 looks as good as it does on the current generation's consoles, why do you think Crytek wants 16x as much RAM in the next generation of hardware?

Cause they created a game that was a benchmark on the PC and another game that looks f*cking fantastic on everything and they think they should be able to ask for more cause everyone is paying them a bunch of attention and kudos right now. But considering the PS3 & XBox have been out for quite a while now, it probably goes without saying that the next gen consoles will have graphic capabilites and memory that are orders of magnitude above the current stuff.

Just an afterthought... While I haven't played either Cysis or Crysis 2 (yet), it seems that if a company is already thinking, in whatever capacity, of making a sequel to a game waaaaaay down the line, they should be more concerned with making sure the gameplay is awesome enough to keep people coming back. If the game is super duper awesome, people will play whether or not the game is the most cutting edge graphical acheivement ever.

Frankly, with the way memory has gotten so cheap in the past few years, if the next gens DON'T have 8G+ I'm going to be wondering what the f*ck the inevitable $400 price tags are paying for.

@MrrClean: I think that's why Crysis 2 was reviewed so highly. Crytek always wets their pants over Cryengine but in reality the fact that the suit-powers were streamlined is why Crysis 2 got the scores it did.

Honestly, Crysis 2 looks like crap next to Crysis and Crysis: Warhead. Blame porting Crysis 2 to consoles for the compromised graphics and physics.

Okay now you guys are getting out of hand. Crysis 2 looked amazing period end of story. Then the enhanced graphics update?! come on now. if you're gonna ***** about a game do it on the forums. This is a ****ing reasonable need for a company like crytek with constantly advancing technology why shouldn't they want 8 gigs of ram so just because you broke asses might not be able to afford something good for once doesn't mean anyone else wouldn't. Anyways dont you guys think 10 years for these same shitty consoles right now is enough to want a good enough upgrade to leave it in the dust?

Crysis 2 was generally a downgrade both technically and gameplay-wise. Its may be a great game, but its a Farcry from its former self. Pun Intended.

@danielrbischoff: Don't get me wrong, dude, I'm sure Crysis 2 is wicked, I can't wait to play it, and I'm sure I'm gonna get addicted when I do. Seriously, FPS with some awesome-mondo supersuit? Thats just f*cking awesome.

I'm only saying that Crytek should make sure its gameplay going to be wicked enough to keep people coming back 3 or 4 games into the series. That many reiterations of the same basic premise can get a tad stale, wicked though the idea may be.
