Dark Souls Developer Asks For Forgiveness

These days, bugs and glitches are just a part of the equation in major video game releases. Let's not forget all of those... amazing... hilarious bugs in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Of course, we haven't heard a word from developer Bethesda.

Maybe it speaks volumes that the developers behind Dark Souls are taking their bugs much more seriously, even going so far as to hope that gamers forgive them for the small frame-rate issues and off-change glitches. Creative Director Hidetaka Miyazaki told Edge:

Yes, there were technical difficulties. I don't believe that it's OK to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game—even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan.

Dude, Miyazaki, don't even worry about it. I honestly can't even say I saw a noticeable amount of bugs in Dark Souls. Sure, slight frame-rate issues, but it was an amazing experience and I certainly don't want you to think we don't want more from you and your team.

We don't even know if we'll have another chance.

We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer.

    I'd walk through Blighttown with heavy armor and no stamina a 100 times to see another Souls game.

    Only issue I ever had was some lag in Blighttown, bring on more Souls!

    The only thing besides the lag, which has been mentioned, was the netcode and online stuff was a bit screwy.

    But hey, drops in a bucket. There was nothing gamebreaking that was actually worth apologizing over.

    I think that this is actually a bad PR move to be honest. I didn't play Dark Souls so I don't know, but I DID play Demons' Souls and found it to be quite a solid game. From what I'm hearing, Dark Souls is also a solid game. Apologizing for "bugs" in a game that are so small, I think is actually more problematic than anything else. Someone who has never played the game might think "Wow, how buggy was it that they had to apologize? Must be pretty bad." When that's not the case, it seems like associating your product with "bugs" in any way is unwise. It would have been more PR friendly to phrase it in a positive light: "We are extremely proud of the game we shipped, and in spite of a few minor frame-rate issues, feel it is an extremely solid experience. In future releases, we hope to improve on an already solid foundation, and remove even the smallest of bugs as well." Sure, it sounds a little fake, but I honestly think it's better than humbling yourself when it's really not required or expected of you.

    It may be too late, I think we just lost all chance of a Dark Souls sequel to seppuku.
