Dead Island Sells 5 Million Copies, Shows The Power Of Marketing

Posted on Tuesday, February 5 @ 12:56:00 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

If you've ever wondered why marketing is so important, here's your example.

Deep Silver has announced that its 2011 title, Dead Island, has just surpassed 5 million sales across all platforms. The milestone comes about 17 months after its debut and just two months before the release date of its successor, Dead Island: Riptide.

As much as Dead Island was a good game, it's hard not to give marketing a pat on the back for the achievement. The game received a sizeable pool of underwhelmed consumers post-release who weren't afraid to voice their opinion about the game's long list of questionable glitches and arguably redundant combat. Additionally, the title was a new IP, and seldom do we see new titles push into the seven digits... times five.

The first Dead Island trailer obtained over 10 million views in quick order, spurring interest from gamers and movie-goers alike. It's no surprise that Deep Silver did the same thing for Dead Island: Riptide, but only time will tell if the same trick works twice.

The only thing that kept my friends and I playing that game was the coop.

The only thing that kept my friends and I from playing it was the co-op. (no couch co-op)

I found the game to be enjoyable with and without coop, at least when the coop worked. I'm interested in Riptide as well

It was fun simply because it was coop, but honestly the whole time I played Dead Island, I was thinking about how I could be playing Dead Rising 2.

I enjoyed the game. Combat was redundent but didnt feel that way until end. Story was good until the end. I was a total tool and couldnt figure out why I couldn't join online or people join my games. Turns out, I was in lan mode for the entire game.

i really enjoyed dead island... (fun game, great graphics, good co-op) with that said... the trailer was very misleading... i expected a completely different game and at 1st i was disappointed... but after playing it for a while i got hooked, i really enjoyed the melee combat & the gore... playing with friends is a blast... and imo while flawed its one of the best zombie game experiences...

GR really does not like DI. I enjoyed the game and the fact that the coop worked well (for the most part - non host driving was a pain). The story was alright, and I got to kill thousands of Zombies and feel like superman most of the time.

Dead Island was a fun game and co-op was a blast. It was pretty unique for a Zombie game as well. Heard it had a ton of glitches but my friends and i never really saw those too much. Only had 1 huge glitch on the last level and that was really it.

Who do you voodoo *****, lol fun times

I'm one of those easily scared people and I love it, playing this game solo gave me a pretty worrisome feeling most of the time as these dudes would creep out of nothing and come running at you. I think the pretty island setting was a big part of the enjoyment for me too. Co-op I didn't enjoy it because my friend just sprinted everywhere and made it much less scary. To each thier own though. I didn't really experience any glitches either, but I only made it about 50% I think. I will finish it someday and definitely checking out Riptide!
