E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Dead Space 3 Is "Twice As Long As Dead Space 1 or 2"

Posted on Tuesday, January 22 @ 15:29:00 Eastern by

I was joined by PlayStation Lifestyle's Chandler Wood at the Dead Space 3 preview event in San Francisco two weeks ago. Chandler's been hard at work on our sister-site for some time now, but with the upcoming sci-fi-horror sequel in front of us, neither could resist digging deep for as much information as possible.

That included a lengthy interview with Visceral Games producer David Woldman. Woldman was extremely forthcoming with information, but careful not to reveal too much. In addition to level design, cinematic moments, and extraneous story content, Woldman also keyed us into the amount of content packed into Dead Space 3.

We try to ensure that there is enough value on the disc. Times are maybe getting better, but they're still tough on people's incomes. Dead Space 3, just in the single campaign, by itself, is conservatively twice as long as Dead Space 1 or 2.

For the full interview, hop over to PlayStation Lifestyle.

I'm all for more content but there comes a point, especially in something with the pacing of a survival horror game, where your game can just be too long and turns into a chore.

I'm currently running through the Resident Evil series and the first two games take between 3 and 4 hours on a first playthrough, and that's basically perfect for the pace that they have. I'm going through 3 right now and even though it's a better game I looked it up and found out that the point I'm at that I thought was the end is only the halfway point. I didn't think "Oh cool, more Resident Evil!" I just thought "Jesus, this isn't over yet?" and that's even taking into account I'm enjoying the game.

Obviously this concept only really has bearing on adventure type games though.

I have to agree. Sometimes "MOAR GAME" isn't the best route, but I think a large chunk of what Woldman is calling "Dead Space 3" is optional objectives and seeking out the side-story bits like audio logs and text logs. I think just the main campaign will be about the same size, if a little longer.

Well if that's the case, that's the optimal way to do it. The way to add content is to build around your story, not needlessly extend it. As far as I'm concerned the more content the better as long as it's quality.

When you say "the first two games" I assume that means you are actually playing Resident Evils 1 and 2, yes? If so, 3-4 hours on a first playthrough (if you've never beaten the game before and don't know exactly what to do at every turn) is a pretty damn good time. Having a strategy guide or prior knowledge of how to beat the game can speed up the gameplay exponentially. On my 50th or so playthrough of RE 1 with the infinite rocket launcher and Magnum, my record is a 1.5 hour run. RE 2 (my favorite of the entire series) I can beat using the infinite goodies in around two or so hours.

My least favorite of the series is Code Veronica. That's the game that has me going "dear God, more of this crap?" I've never beaten that game. I just can't bring myself to finish it.

Yes, 1 and 2, the first two games. Honestly I can't really see 3 and 4 hours being impressive times, sorry. They're extremely straightforward games. They're highly enjoyable but really the puzzles are nothing more than "oh I have this, now I have to go to this thing I saw earlier" or "looks like I have to hit these three buttons in the right order."

If it makes any difference I didn't save Jill / Chris because I assumed due to the linear nature it would have just happened in a cutscene or something, although that would have taken a whole 5 or 6 extra minutes. Also I only finished RE2 as Claire because both character's stories are the same thing with slightly different dialogue, essentially.

Love the contact beam. I've been playing with the Detonator Mines a lot, setting traps for those damn Rapter-necros. Nearly to the end of my pre-DS3 playthrough now.

Those freaking Raptor-necros scare the crap out of me. And those dam exploding babies, but that's probably my fear of real babies translating into the game.

I don't necessarily think more content means a better game, don't want repetitiveness to settle in. I think splinter cell conviction is a good example of a short game that doesn't need to be any longer. It's one of the shortest games I've played but the pacing is perfect and I really enjoyed the story, if they'd made it longer that might not be the case. I'm worried about DS3 though. co-op? Long campaign? Sounds like a shooter, not a horror, and that's what scares me

Long campaign doesn't really mean shooter to me. Shooter campaigns are more linear, shorter. Dead Space 3 seems to be going the questing-path. You can do these objectives, if you want, and get valuable resources, weapons, and other loot by completing them, or you can play the story. Either way you're going to have Necromorphs trying to pop out and scare you, outright kill you, swarm you, flank you. Maybe you have the health packs to hold out. Maybe you're playing on a harder difficulty (there are several varied difficulties (more on those later))...

Yeah associating 'shooter' with 'long' made more sense in my head. But what I meant by that was I hope they aren't trying to extend the game by having huge action set pieces where you kill wave after wave after wave of enemies just to make the game seem longer. Questing wouldn't be a bad way to go, I have recently been enjoying the general set-up of rpg's and not just RPG elements. But at the same time, that would eliminate what made me love dead space (and
resident evil) in the first place, limited supplies. The hardest difficulties of those games are so much more fun and suspenseful because you are constantly worrying about whether or not you'll have enough supplies for the rest of the game, and that one bad firefight could ruin everything. If the game does have side-questing for more supplies like you predict, there's no way this game will live up to it's predecessors for me

"Shooter campaigns are more linear, shorter."

STALKER, dude. Non-linear, a good player can beat it in about 20 hours (a good player can beat The Witcher 2 in about 20 hours) and it's also a survival horror game to boot. I just hope most of this length isn't from in-engine cutscenes and the like. I'd rather be doing things. The demo contained one quick time event, a boss fight, and numerous smaller encounters. Perhaps the game was being generous as it was a demo but I never felt the least bit vulnerable or insecure. The first Dead Space did a far better job of creating a pervasive sense of dread; a necessity for a horror game to deliver.

Yes, absolutely. The tutorial will train you, but I highly suggest nothing higher than normal as the game can be difficult.

Great interview. Guy had me dead to rights about never switching off the plasma cutter. Hard to justify putting a power node into gimmick gun X when I can use it to further the BFPC's ascent to Godhood.

Yeah, I heard that too. I was kinda excited about this game, but once I heard that it uses micro-transactions it totally knocked itself down to meh. Going to buy this used while I still can.

Just played the demo, not impressed at all. No suspense, no horror, cover system, enemies that shoot (infected and not alike). It's resident evil 5 all over again! Of course I did actually like re5, but my tolerance for mindless, conforming-to-the-popular-shooter crowd has lowered significantly since then
