Undead Lab's zombie-infested action title has finally hit XBLA. Is it worth a few of your precious Microsoft Points, or should you whack it over the head with a two-by-four and continue on your merry way?

E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Dead Space 4 Reportedly Canceled Because DS3 Failed To Reach Sales Targets [Update: EA Says It's "False"]

Posted on Tuesday, March 5 @ 07:49:00 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

[UPDATE]: Gamasutra has been informed by EA that this report is "patently false."

[Original Story]: Pre-production on Dead Space 4 has been canceled, if a recent report proves to be true. According to VideoGamer, an unnamed source with inside information on the project told the outlet that because Dead Space 3 didn't reach the sales targets EA had set in place, the fourth game was scrapped.

The report goes on to add that Visceral Montreal was told about the cancelation last month alongside the announcement of EA's plans to restructure. Not only that but the source claims that Dead Space 3 "was almost canceled" during development, and EA told Visceral to make the game more action-heavy to reach a wider audience.

The publisher was expecting the game to sell somewhere around the 5 million mark and apparently that goal was not reached. Keep in mind that EA has yet to confirm any of this, so take this report with a grain of salt for the time being. That said, are you sad to see the Dead Space franchise possibly go? Let us know in the comments below.

good riddance, who the hell would want to play part four of a game series with only one pretty good iteration

I haven't played any of the DS games. Normally I'd be all over a sci-fi title, but this one just didn't interest me.

Oh sales targets, sales targets... How about quality targets? I'm not a Dead Space addict, but I really liked 1 and was completely OK with 2 but 3 was just lame. A shooter without substance. They changed the core character (not evolved him, but outright changed his character). He went from being a nobody surviving on a ship masterfully incorporating him into a survival-horror sci-fi action adventure setting, into a formulaic Hollywood superhero within a formulaic Hollywood game-movie. It's clear to me that Dead Space 3 was nothing more than a "sales-target" to begin with, not a work of electronic art.

"an unnamed source with inside information" lol, I love it when I read articles and they sound like secret espionage dossiers or something lol.

I be fair, the part about "Dead Space will self destruct after 1 game" was accurate.

Lol, man did it ever. I mean I was never the biggest fan of the series, but I owned the first 2 and played the 3rd. If you play them all in succession it's pretty remarkable how you can just see the downward spiral the series goes through

I was going to post about this but I wanted to wait until I could get the videogamer.com page to load. It's still down. So Visceral Games shall go, with Maxis, Westwood, Pandemic, Origin, and Bullfrog. Bioware is sure to join them in the near future.

EA is almost like some weird video game publishing vampire. They buy out these studios publish their biggest franchises, then discard their broken corpses like it's nothing.

Being that its not on steam and only on Origin for PC Gamers, that probably affected it too.

Never finished Dead Space. The pacing is terrible and the characters are inconsequential. I liked the horror aspect for the beginning of the game, but I play games for story/narrative, and I just didn't get absorbed in it.

You really should give it another go! Dead Space (1) is a real treat as long as you stick with it. Not sure how far you got into it, but I also remember I wasn't captivated by it right away, but it does develop nicely, and it never really breaks into any cliches (unlike its sequels).

I'm on like Chapter 8 or so. I still have it, but it keeps getting moved back in my list. Maybe I'll hold onto it for a really rainy day.

Oh shoot, by Chapter 8 you should be into it, if not, yeah, maybe it's just not your cup of tea. Sorry to hear it, but maybe you're right, on a really boring day it might at least get you motivated enough to finish it and close that book for good.

I mean, I really, REALLY like the atmospheric horror. I think it's one of the best examples of survival horror in the past ten years. And as much as I want the answers to some of the big questions, I just haven't gotten absorbed. Maybe part of the problem is that Isaac has no character development. I know the journal entries and come cutscenes allude to his past, but it didn't feel strong enough.

It seems that a nameless source at EA contradicts the videogamer.com article nameless source. Also a member of Visceral (the guy who designed the UI for Dead Space) said they haven't been shut down. Still, remember when the head of GSC said that STALKER 2 wasn't cancelled?

Well to be fair, the game probably doesn't need a fourth iteration.

BUT.......we gotta find out what happens to Issac in space.......by himself.

EH...the 3rd one was ok. No real scares or suspense like the first two. I just really enjoyed the weapon crafting from the 3rd one. Its funny how these guys are following the steps of Resident Evil and Capcom now says that they need to go back to its roots.

And this wasnt because DS3 was really that bad. A lot of my friends wont buy it out of protest of the microtransactions in a single player game. I used hex editors to hack the game and give me those resources anyways. Fuck you EA until you stop this shitty practice(They said its going to be every game now) I wont be giving you money.

As much as i logically understand that this is business.... Fuck you EA... i hope due to this practices you will become bankrupt. Because this kind of attitude halts the creative process - therefore destroying the main idea behind game creation.

I mean this with all due respect to your idealism, but corporations no longer foster creativity, and certainly not the "creative process". I'm not suggesting that there aren't creative people in the industry, but as a business, the focus is on shareholder earnings, and as such everything is based on income statements and balance sheets. It's just how it is.

The claim that Visceral was getting shut down or the claim that they are not?

How so? If DS3 didn't meet EA's absurd sales target it's very likely Visceral will get shut down. In other words, one announcement is much more plausible than the other. There is ample precedent (see the note about GSC above) for people at the heart of the situation playing Baghdad Bob.
