Diablo III Breaks PC Pre-Order Records For Amazon and Blizzard

Posted on Thursday, May 10 @ 19:19:55 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

When Blizzard Entertainment has a new game coming out you can bet your house on it selling like water during a dry summer. Even with that in mind, few would have guessed just how many Diablo III pre-orders there are.

GameSpot has been told by a representative at Amazon that Diablo III is now the most pre-ordered PC game in their 18-year history beating out games such as World of Warcraft—including its over 9,000 expansions—Battlefield 3, StarCraft II, and all of the other PC gaming juggernauts. This has come on the heels of the announcement that it is also the most pre-ordered game in Blizzard's history, a fact that was announced during Activision Blizzard's quartery earnings report.

What makes this announcement so meaningful is that this isn't another mainstream FPS game that inheritably picks up over a million pre-orders merely by existing, this is a deep action role-playing game with classic roots. Granted, Blizzard has a prolific fan base, but Diablo and Diablo II are considered by many to be hardcore games that have a more niche market than Blizzard's other IPs. That said, Diablo III is one badass game, and if there's one thing I've learned about games and sales it's that word of mouth is everything, and the recent beta was met with a lot of praise.

Are you as excited as I am for this game? No? Don't worry, it'll come to consoles soon. Heck, your PC might even be able to play it. Check out our latest guide to see if your specs can run this demonic beast.

Its a shame that the Blizzard of today is nothing compared to the Blizzard of the past.

Since when is Diablo a hardcore game? You run around and click a lot. It's fun, but it does not lack mass appeal.

Isn't WoW just autoattack, hitting hotkeys and a lot of background dice rolling? Isn't Starcraft the same thing? Everything Blizzard has put out has had some very large appeal, hence their existence. Hardcore is such a vague term nowadays.

Why does this make me want a new PC. Hopefully the huge number of preorders expedites the port to console

This news doesn't surprise me a whole lot, i'm more interested in seeing what the review scores will be. Diablo 2, despite being insanely popular among the general public and critics alike, had an average of about 8.3%, well below what you'd expect from a game with such popularity. Then again, critics are waaay more generous now than they used to be

Thanks to Steam breaking me of what PA described so eloquently as "Animism," I had no issue foregoing the pretty box art in favor of an instant midnight release via Battle.net.

I'm actually amazed so many people pre-ordered from Amazon--are they offering free 1 day shipping or guaranteed delivery by Friday?

The wife pre-ordered D3 for me. They're claiming launch day delivery, but since I never pre-order and thus have no experience in the matter I'm skeptical.
