E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Dirty Bomb Is An Online FPS Where Gamers Have Direct Input On Development

Posted on Wednesday, January 30 @ 12:05:10 Eastern by

It didn't surprise me to find that Dirty Bomb was in development at Splash Damage, makers of 2011's Brink. The two look quite similar visually, but maybe with a bit more restraint. Colors don't splash the walls and floor, leaving room for more realistic, muted tones.

What did surprise me was the level of input gamers have in the way maps, guns, and classes worked. It might sound silly to hear that SD is "upping the ante" by leaping ahead of the beta process, but when it comes to online first-person shooters, such a high volume of developer-player interaction is crucial.

The most popular, longest lasting, and highest selling PC shooters are the ones that cater to players with tons of updates. In that sense, enjoying years of time in game where your actions are actually helping to fine-tune and make the experience more fun might make buying in now actually worth it.

That's right, this work is all leading up to an eventual product launch. At the moment, you can buy yourself a spot in line for the closed alpha. $30 gives you "Priority Access" but the Legendary Pack at $120 will give you access "NOW." Splash Damage has also gone with full Kickstarter pricing schemes and offered some players access to the developer chat room and forum ($240+).

What do you think about this alternative approach from the minds behind some of the most beloved and most meh'd shooters?

Alright GR, time to drop some knowledge. First this is unrelated to the game mentioned and more to your incompetence. The game is Natural Selection 2, is just hit Steam a couple months ago. From the start is has been molded around player input. The game had an alpha and a beta that was purely player driven. It still is being developed based on user input. I asked GR to review/preview this game for at least 1 year. Get it together.

It is also an FPS. It was a kickstarter project where it had people pre-order the game to fund development. This game is everything GR looks for and praises but somehow slipped under your radar. Please check out Natural Selection 2.

I would love to review Natural Selection 2, but we were never contacted by the developers and unfortunately, at this point it doesn't make sense to spend budget (money or time) on such a late review. That said, I've heard your many requests and they're only driving my curiosity of the game. I just don't have the time to play :(

The budget argument is fair and maybe I am naive about your preview/review process. (They have to contact you or they never responded to your initial inquest?) I just think this is a great genre defining game and deserves everyone's attention.

I reached out to them but never received a response. It's possible that they didn't have enough codes to go around and we just didn't cover the game enough leading up to release.

Make a user review. Do something really great and I bet the awesome staff would put it on the front page as a community article.

That's a win-win where you get a game you love the (apparently deserved) attention it deserves AND you don't look like a total douche by flinging anger around.

They also released an editor and give direct support to allow people to mod the game in any way and build maps. It is like Valve and what they did with Half-Life.
Ha. Can you tell I'm miffed?
